As far as anyone could tell right now, the crystals came with strange parasites, able to infect anyone who had the genes to have a quirk. 90% of the global population had been left to a fate worse than death, left alive as hosts for the Neon Beasts, predatory creatures made of vividly lit crystals. As far as anyone could tell, they served as mere flesh puppets for the things, unable to use their host's quirk, but that didn't make them any less dangerous. Dad had had his fair share of fights with them, some close enough that there was a crater in the ground near the mall's movie theater where he'd taken out a horde of the things with Prominence Burn. As far as they could tell, they might very well be the only survivors in the area.
