Summary
They sit there quietly for a few minutes, clock ticking away as Arthur drinks his coffee and Merlin lets the steam of his own waft up his nostrils. Something about the simple potential, the easy domesticity, sets Merlin off.
Before he can stop it, he sets his coffee down, puts his head in his hands.
“Merlin, what—” Arthur starts, distress evident from the way he sets his cup down as well and reaches forward as though more touch could help this.
“Why do you keep doing this to me, Arthur?” Merlin asks, breath huffy and voice all cloggy-sounding. He’s embarrassed, he realizes, that he’s let this go on in the foolish hope that Arthur will wake up and realize that he does love Merlin, not Gwen.
He feels Arthur still, because his arms are splayed out in front of himself on the table as though he were trying to reach for Merlin.
Merlin gets no answer to his question, though.
“Leave, please, Arthur,” Merlin says roughly; he has to force himself not to call him back when he hears Arthur take a breath in sharply, before standing, gathering his few things, and leaving the apartment.

“That’s enough, Merlin. I was just letting you know. It’s dangerous to be so… intimate with people like Will.” Merlin nearly laughed at the irony. Arthur’s voice was hard and by this point, most people would back down and stay quiet. But Merlin was not most people.
He gave a bitter chuckle. “It’s dangerous to be intimate? Are you out of your mind? He’s my friend. Did you think he was going to kill me in my sleep? He saved your life!”
Arthur shot Merlin a look. “He’s still a sorcerer. You cannot trust sorcerers, Merlin. If you didn’t know that back in Ealdor, at least get it through your thick skull here.”
“Well, if that’s how you feel, then you’re not going to be happy about the druid girl I fell in love with in Camelot.” In hindsight, it was a bad idea to try and rile Arthur up but a part of him was actually curious to know what Arthur would think.

Merlin dashed over to his bed and pulled out his bag. He used his magic to summon the things he was going to pack and hurriedly shoved them inside. He could hear them now—murmuring voices and even some chanting.
With trembling hands, he fastened the buckle of his bag and slung it over his shoulder along with his medicine bag. Then, as he grabbed his old Sidhe staff, he took one last look around the room he’d come to call home before slipping out the door with a heavy heart.
Merlin’s plan was to sneak through the darkness into the nearest copse before starting to run. But he was too late. As he hurried towards the shadowy trees, he suddenly came face-to-face with one of his pursuers. The man brandished his torch in front of him, lunging towards Merlin as he roared out for the rest of the mob to hear, "There he is!"
Merlin turned on his heels and started to run. He could hear the sound of people pursuing him, twigs and leaves crunching loudly beneath their feet as they followed him into the woodland.
‘Get him!’ called a voice.
‘Don’t let the witch get away!’ yelled another.
‘Witch, witch, witch!’ they chanted.
