The day the knights came, everyone was outside, standing in the small square at the centre of the village. They had all been expecting this visit. It had been four years, after all. This was the only time the King’s knights were ever seen here. They didn’t bother helping with raiders and bandits that frequently stole the village’s meagre food stocks, and they had given up on collecting the taxes that Ealdor was too poor to pay anyway. Every inhabitant was anxiously eyeing the youths among them, wondering which one would be taken to serve in Essetir’s army.
