Summary
Zuko's ship finally reaches the South Pole after a long and treacherous voyage across the Mo Ce Sea as he and his crew faced numerous dangers and risked a lot just to reunite with Sokka. Together, their efforts to solve this strange spirit nonsense that landed them in this alternate reality of their world will result in unearthed conspiracies, devastating betrayals, and more tragedy than either of them has faced before.
Forcing them to face the daunting question: Is it all truly worth it in the end? Or should they simply give up and resign themselves to the simplistic, quiet lives this world has to offer.

Summary
(An alternate take on how the events of Chained would differ if Sokka and Zuko were shapeshifters)
Having found a sickly oddly colored Fire Ferret in the mountain forest near the Earth Kingdom encampment, Sokka's wolfish instincts recognize it as another shifter like himself. A rare occurrence in the world, there are very few who have been blessed with such a gift from the spirits, and Sokka is ecstatic to know there are more of his kind in the world outside of his homeland.
Zuko was not expecting to be picked up and walked into the enemy camp while scouting the area for food and other useful resources to report back to his Captains or harvest himself. With this strange turn of events after an unexpected bout of illness had forced him into his changeling form, his fears of becoming a predators lunch quickly turn in a string of bizarre events as the enemy grows attached to his strange ways.

Summary
One day General How and his men came upon an injured teenage refugee collapsed on the side of the road beside his ostrich horse. How had taken the boy in to be cared for at the Ba Sing Se Military Hospital out of an obligation to help the child, only to find himself quickly considering the fact the lone boy is without a caretaker or parent to see to his recovery. Still uncertain of whether this role will be a temporary one until the boy is back on his feet, How discovers young Li has suffered a terrible head injury that resulted in total memory loss. With only the traveling documents on his person to confirm his name, How takes it upon himself to formally adopt and raise the young man as his own.
Unbeknownst to How, raising a teenager with a clean slate comes with its own obstacles as he juggles the dark impressions of Li's past trauma, unexpected firebending, teenager romance, Li's awkward yet charming shyness, rebellious outbursts and Li's habit of picking up strays, of both the furry and water tribe variety. Parenting was its own battlefield, as How soon discovers.

Summary
There was a stranger sleeping under their stairs.
Zuko wasn't one to turn a blind eye to a homeless kid, but trouble was the last thing he and Uncle needed here in Ba Sing Se. They just finally settled into their roles and found a rhythm for their day to day routines. Living a mundane life had never really appealed to the former prince before, but he could see the benefits in it in terms of fleeing his father's ire and Azula's dogged pursuit.
Stirring the boy awake, Zuko is shocked and alarmed by who it is that had huddled outside of his apartment all night. Confused and in rough shape, Sokka is desperate for answers and aid while stuck in a city he doesn't know. Sokka turns to the one familiar face in the crowded Lower Ring with the fragile hope that he'll find out who he really is.

Summary
A strange mountain hut.
Extensive memory loss.
And a vague sense of wrongness in everything around him, leaves Zuko reeling when he wakes up with very little knowledge on how he got there. He can recall faint impressions of the war but no idea of how he found himself chained to a wall inside what appears to be a hunting cabin. Unable to escape his binds, the young soldier is faced with the knowledge that his strange otherworldly captor is anything but human as he navigates the struggles of language barriers larger than the Great Divide and prays to Agni that this unusual man won't decide to forgo the local wildlife and decide to eat him instead.

If love opens new doors, and death closes them, what does loneliness provide in this situation? Does it cobble together the hallway in which both of these constructs exist equally? It was a curious question that Zuko had pondered for far longer than he had any desire to but it was hard to ignore given present circumstances. Death had tore one life away from his fingertips and then love bled him dry before it raced off into a cold lonely night leaving him without so much as a single lantern to comfort himself with.
He lived now, in this middle ground between those two worlds. Stranded in the desolate hallway that he had come to call loneliness and discovered that both doors that led him to this very moment had been locked tight from the other side. All he had left was the barren land before him and an empty house in which the only warmth that would fill it would come from the sparse kindling within its ashen hearth.

Summary
There were a few questionable choices in General How's life that led him to this point, and he was still on the fence of how exactly he felt about it all. Whether it was some divine intervention or a persuasive whisper from his own conscience, something convinced him to share his home with the firebender he spared and then promptly rescued. Of course simplifying it down to something like that was a crude oversight.
It was when the impenetrable walls of the city had been breached by the determined siege led by General Iroh that How found the badly wounded firebender crawling through the rubble towards the cries of a dying soldier.

Lu Ten survives the Seige of Ba Sing Se. Badly wounded, he lost a leg and his vision to that grisly battle, but was taken in and cared for by the very same General that spared his life on that bloody battlefield.(For the Atlararepairmonth 2023 week one prompt sickfic/disabilities)

Summary
Detective Hakoda Itsarmiu is faced with a complicated case the likes of which Omashu City Police Department has never seen before. What began as the mysterious disappearance of two children, Zuko and Azula Miyajima has led to a string of murders across the city with a series of cryptic messages at each crime scene seemingly mocking the detective's attempts to catch the killer in a race against the clock before the next pair of bodies that they find are the siblings themselves.
As the body count rises, Hakoda must trust his instincts and his son with the hopes that with Sokka's help, they could track down Zuko, but as the days go by and evidence stacks up, they cannot shake this eerie feeling that this case is related to the cold case from years earlier involving the sudden disappearance of Ursa Miyajima. Is the killer coming to finish a job, or send a message that hits home a little too hard? What sort of trouble has Ozai started for his family? Will they reach the kids in time or will their efforts end in vain for the Miyajima siblings?

Summary
The "new era of love and peace" has begun. Team Avatar scatters to be where they're needed in the postwar world. By treaty agreement, the Fire Nation colonies are to be returned to the Earth Kingdom and all Fire Nation subjects repatriated to the homeland—harmony among the nations will be restored, by sanction of the Avatar. But the Gaang finds that peace is sometimes messier than war. Love can mean many things. And harmony may not be found where they think it will.
(A total rewrite of "The Promise" comics, and then some.)

orbiting metaphors and contemplating space hooked me immediately
I like the character motivations, diving deeper into their decisions during canon and very in character
beautiful writing but not so often that it becomes overly flowery
feels more mature than trope-ymaiko and platonic kataang doing justice to those relationships as well instead of bashing
adding detail and texture to canon plot pointsI like that they imply off screen visits, and touch points - everyone is busy and there are no full reunions in 3 years but I hate the "Katara hasn't left Aang's side or seen her family in 5 years" tropes
good legend / history world building
small critique: clearly a lot of thought went into doing the yu dao story "right" but I think it still dips into colonial sympathizer mentality a little here and there. but they did really add depth to it
warning: book 5 incomplete and does not end on a satisfying note
