Law cuts his gaze to directly across the dining table, to where Nico Robin has deliberately seated herself right in front of him. She’s sipping calmly at her drink (conscientiously prepared by Black-Leg, if the fruit wedges cut into hearts and excessively swirly straw are any indication). Sensing the weight of his gaze, Nico Robin looks up and meets Law’s eye, and smiles; Law merely narrows his eyes for a second, before looking away.
I know you don’t trust me, is what Law’s gaze says.
I know you know that I know that, is what Robin’s smile says in response.
When Law’s proposal for a pirate alliance gets accepted by a beaming Straw-Hat, Law is under no illusions.

Her smiles are a weapon, Law has come to realise; her intentions are tucked away secretive and hidden in the corners of her mouth, and it’s impossible to tell at first meeting whether she is smiling sincerely or whether she is hiding skeletons in the closets of her smile. The only reason why Law can even begin to tell a difference at all is because Law has seen the way Nico Robin, devil child of the seas and wanted fugitive from the age of eight, acts around Straw-Hat Luffy; laughter so light and smile so carefree it is as if she has never known a world of hurt. And even then, the difference is so minute to him that Law can barely catch it.

“Oh boy, creepy smile,” Luffy said, grabbing Law’s shoulder so he could lean up and poke his cheek.
“I’m guessing that’s his scheming face,” Kuzan chuckled.
“Stop plotting in your head! Plot out loud!” Luffy demanded.
“Well, is has immediate ties to the Marines. If we took it…”
“Huh. Never taken over an island before,” Luffy admitted. “…Is it a cool island?”
“The battle warped the climate into one half being a frozen wasteland and the other a volcanic hellscape,” Rocinante said.
“Traffy, we’re totally taking that island!”
Rocinante said. “I made you a folder.”
“You get the folder, I get to take over the island,” Luffy told Law.
“That’s not how that works and you know it,” Law said, poking him in the chest. “We both get the folder and both get to take over the island.”
Law glared at Kuzan when he chuckled. They were not cute, damn it!

“You were too cute not to help from the start!”
“I said I wanted to destroy as much as I could and then stabbed you because you threw me out the window,” Law said. “Those were our first two interactions.”
“And you were somehow tragically adorable while doing both,” Rocinante said.

“In fact we have to almost exclusively improvise because some people don’t know what plans are,” Sabo teased, ruffling Luffy’s hair.
“We have a plan!” Luffy complained. “We go in, we kidnap Caesar, we take over! See, I can plan!”
“Hey guys!” Usopp called from the crow’s nest. “You can see Punk Hazard now!”
Luffy instantly left the meeting.
“Can we fit an actual plan into Luffy’s framework?” Koala asked. “Please?”
“The actual plan is to split up, gather info, regroup, and then kidnap Caesar and take over, possibly while wrecking the facilities either as cover or because we don’t want them,” Law said. “Beating people up whenever necessary, of course.”
“OH MY GOSH GUYS THIS ISLAND IS SO COOL LOOKING! WE’VE GOT TO HAVE IT!”
“…I’ve got to see this!” Ace ran.

“Great!” Luffy said. “Ooh, ooh, and if I don’t see it, remember it really, really well to tell me all about it!”
“Will do,” Ace promised solemnly. Law could have sworn he heard someone facepalm in the background.

“Your dad had a point—are we both the captain?”
Law scowled, “You want to do this now?”
“Well…I’m the one who’s going to be Pirate King,” Luffy said.
Law frowned at him, “Luffy-ya, if you outrank me, you might be dumb enough to give me orders. And if you give me orders, we are going to have a problem.”
“Nah, Traffy’s too stubborn for orders. I know that. I’ve got to ask nicely."
Law chuckled. Yeah, ask nicely and wait for Law to cave because he was a sap or ask nicely and then go ahead anyway. “Very nicely, Straw Hat.”
“So…I’m in charge?” Luffy asked slyly.
“I’ll think about it.”
“Yes! I’m in charge, haha!” Luffy crowed.
“What did I just say?” Law demanded.
“That you’d think, which means you’ll say yes but not now! It’s okay, Traffy, I’m not going to boss your around, remember?” Luffy asked.
Law groaned and leaned back against Bepo. Sometimes he wondered why he even bothered.
Luffy laughed and threw his arms around Law, curling against him.
Law smiled softly, wrapping an arm around Luffy in return. Oh, right—that was why.

“Certain doom awaits,” Brook chuckled.
Ace beamed, “Luffy’s going to be so jealous he missed this!”

“Come on, Luffy-ya, you’ll feel better after we punch Caesar in the face,” Law chuckled.
“How is he going to be cooler than a giant chemical salamander Ace is going to get to blow up?” Luffy whined.
“…He’s a person, so you’ll see the hilarious panic on his face before you punch him,” Franky said.

Doffy’s smile stretched grotesquely. “Aokiji will stop looking because he’s not looking for anyone. He won’t remember you at all. And Law…I wonder what it will do to him…” Doffy mused. “Suddenly his hero, his ‘father’…never existed.”
Rocinante’s eyes widened.
“And whenever Sugar turns someone into a toy with me in the room, I always check myself for notes so I know just what to do with that toy! There used to be all these toys who I had this nagging feeling I was supposed to hate or torture but I never knew who they were. So I started notetaking and it’s been so much better ever since!”

As Law ducked a swing from the Marine he suddenly felt enraged. Why was he playing nice with them?
He squeezed their hearts.

“On my right shoulder, R!” Law said pointing at the tattoo. “I…I think the K is Kuzan but that doesn’t make any sense! Who is R?”
Luffy glanced down at the picture he was holding, “Maybe this guy?”

The crew's finally together! Though they haven't gotten much time to actually catch up. So, after finally making it to New World, and their adventures from Fishman Island were out of the way, they settle down somewhere to do just that.
Luffy hasn't exactly recovered from the events of the Paramount War. As captain of the Mugiwara no Ichimi, he pushed down his feelings on the matter, and strived to get stronger for the sake of his nakama.
But trauma's ultimately a curse. And he's bound to have a repercussion.
Sanji to the rescue! Because honestly, he knows exactly how his captain feels.

Sanji held his breath, praying to whatever asshole god was out there that Zoro would listen to him just this once.I’ve noticed about pirates, mercenaries, and other low life scum?” He did not wait for Sanji to answer. He stood up and bit into the lemon as if it were an apple. “You have family. Fascinating, isn’t it? How amoral groups are bound together in what is the most powerful, purest force in the world. How evil can someone be when they are fighting for who they care for?” Sanji squinted at Romano in confusion. He had not been expecting this. “Fortunately for me,” Romano grinned. “I have been gifted the ability to inflict a fever that fixes all of that. A second chance for everyone. What will you be like, Mister Sanji, when you come to the conclusion you owe nothing to your friends and family? What will you become when cut of your connections and made… truly free?” Sanji’s breath caught. He thought of Zoro, trapped in the jail cell, so virulently angry at Sanji but still with his compassion and care intact. What would he become with no loyalty or love for Zeff, for Luffy, for Nami, for Robin, for anyone he ever met? A lump formed in his throat. He shouldn’t have come here. At the time the challenge had seemed like a smart idea. A way to prove to the cook that he was full of shit, but nothing had turned out as he envisioned it. There was something wrong with the crew. Maybe he picked the wrong lie. He wanted them to think he was not aware of their bullshit, but now all it meant was that everyone was going to treat him nicely in order to pretend that they treated Zoro as an equal so he would stay.

Zoro felt his chest tighten to the point he felt like he was going to explode. Something felt wrong and he didn’t know why.
“Same reason I removed the barbed wires,” Zoro spoke, trying to keep his voice level. “Some part of me refuses to let you die.”
“You didn’t remove the barbed wires,” Sanji muttered, venom on his tongue. He inched away from Zoro with what little space he had.
Zoro opened his mouth and then closed it.
“Cook.”
“What?”
“What if it’s true?”
Sanji stared at Zoro blankly.
“What if it’s true that… both of us forgot something good here?” Zoro asked.
Sanij rolled his eyes and let his bangs cover his entire face. “Look… mosshead… you… you have a good life here, but you don’t have to worry about me. I can’t leave here even if I want to. So just wait until you get your memories back.”
Zoro rolled his eye. It felt like manipulative woe-is-me bullshit. Because that’s what it was. That’s what Sanji did. He found a way to make it about him he found a way to--
