“I want to run away.” Charlie said immediately, the sound of distress clear in his words. Nick heard some noise going on in the background, it sounded like a footsteps against concrete. He could also hear the faint wind blowing, like Charlie was outside. There was also something unrecognizable in his voice. It sounded almost emotionless, but at the same time it was still full of emotion. Regardless, it worried Nick a lot because he’s never really heard that tone from Charlie before unless something was really wrong.
“What?” Nick asked, and Charlie went silent for a few moments before he spoke again.
“Come outside.”
And so Nick left his room without a second thought about it.

Summary
Charlie and Nick find each other on Tinder. They are 18 and 19. They didn’t go to the same school, and Nick never explored his sexuality because of it. He is starting to now. Charlie is out, but spent high school single, with the exception of the disaster that was Ben Hope. He stayed close to his friends Elle, Issac and Tao the whole time. He is spending his last summer at home before leaving for uni, while Nick is back in town from uni before the next term starts. On one fateful night Charlie decides to download Tinder where he stumbles across Nick’s profile, who in a moment of bravery had decided to change his settings from only women to everyone.

Charlie freezes, certain that he’s hallucinating. “Er, sorry?”
“Nick Nelson.” Mr. Farouk turns the screen of his desktop so Charlie can catch a glimpse of the photo he’s pulled up.
Nick Nelson stares back at him, his beaming face red and sweaty and covered in streaks of mud. He is also, most notably, hoisting up last year’s rugby league Challenge Cup trophy in his arms, balanced precariously on his team’s shoulders after an astonishing win by the Leeds Rhinos he’d undoubtedly contributed to.
Charlie begins to feel faint.
Or: In which Charlie and Nick become nothing more than acquaintances back in Truham, instead crossing paths again in their adulthood as a budding journalist tasked with writing a feature on a rising rugby star.

University hasn’t been ideal, in Charlie’s eyes. He has friends, he likes his major well enough, but too often do the rugby lads slam his shoulder a little too hard and too often does he feel the ache of distance from home. Fortunately, the best thing walks into his life- his new roommate, Nicholas “Nick” Nelson.
What started as a quick friendship quickly develops into more, at least in Charlie’s eyes. Friends don’t normally know what it feels like to kiss your neck, to hear quiet whines and desperate grasps, lacking discarded clothing. But they’ve settled into this new arrangement, a friendship with an asterisk that doesn’t go beyond hookups and the feel of Nick’s lips on his- no strings attached. Too bad for Charlie that he wants every string attached.
