Summary
Flying back to Cherry Street, weaving reckless in the dark, it comes down to this: Dick is the only one of his siblings that Jason has any real claim on. Dick is the only one of that whole mess of victims to Batman's cult of self-immolation who belongs to Jason. Even more than that - Dick is the only person in the world who he shares a parent with, who knows what it meant to be the Robin to Batman of nearly ten years ago.
It's just not the same anymore.
So if Dick fucking kicks it, Jason's the only one left. Jason becomes an only child. Jason becomes the last of his kind. Jason becomes the sole keeper of that memory, of a brotherhood shared under a man who no longer exists. There is no way to replace Dick, because the world that they lived in together is gone, and can never give Jason a surrogate.
The Red Hood pulls the thread on a mystery big enough to bridge the distance between two cities, two brothers: The plot they unravel is far deeper and darker than a garden-variety drug trafficking scheme. A story about siblingship, hauntings, and rivers.

Dick’s cheek smashed against the sharp gravel, Slade’s body pinning him to the ground. “That was hardly a fight at all, kid,” Slade murmured in his ear before he pulled off of Dick, replacing his body weight by slamming his knee on the small of Dick’s spine and keeping it there. “I’m disappointed, honestly. You trying to lose?”
Dick’s fingers spasmed and curled into the gravel in silence, and then, slowly, Slade shifted. Removed his knee. Slade gave a rough, startled laugh as he made the realization, and Dick heard him sit back, then stand.
“You were,” Slade murmured, sounding almost delighted. Or — at least, as close as a man like that could get.
Dick rolled over and pulled himself up, brushing the debris from his face and his clothes, heart jackhammering as he stared Slade in the eye. Dick swallowed hard.
“I have a deal for you.”
Slade huffed, like that was quaint, the corner of his lip upturning. “...A deal?”
“A deal," Dick said quietly. "One year."

Something about the severity of the situation made it impossible to remain strong, Dick feeling much more like a child than he had in a long time. Suddenly he wasn’t twenty-seven anymore, member of the Blüdhaven Art Society and proud social worker in a system so broken, Dick could only hope to save one kid at a time. Both as Nightwing and Dick Grayson. No, right now he was nine and his parents had just died, and the adults ignored him, even as the screaming permanently etched itself into the crevices of his brain, the smell of blood ruining his life for the very first time. Back then, Bruce had shown up, covering his small shoulders with his too large coat, talking to him even when Dick was too grief stricken to answer, his expensive cologne masking the heavy scent of death.
Dick wanted Bruce to show up now as well, covering his shivering and pain-wrecked body with a jacket too big for them both.
Mortally wounded and stranded on an alien planet with nothing but a destroyed airship and Batman, Dick and his dad take a walk down memory lane.

“If it were vandalism it would be something a lot more juvenile. To the point. It wouldn’t claim there were seventeen missing kids. That’s public outcry.”
“Is that so?”
“That and I tried to do a story on the growing number of homeless children last month and I got shut down. According to the last count, the numbers have been decreasing, but there’s been no change in policies, no extra funding to CPS, or shelters, or even an increase in the number of inmates in the juvenile detention center. So where are they going?”
Detective Bruce Wayne may have the highest solve rate in Gotham, but if he wants to solve this case, he’ll need the help of an elusive street kid, and while Dick Grayson always lands on his feet, he usually lands himself right into trouble.
