Lizzie shook her head. The image in her mind was like a dream, shimmering and transparent, thin as gauze. She had to hold it in the corner of her mind in a bubble, and if she thought about it too hard, the bubble popped. Then she had to wait until she had some idea of what she was searching for again, and the last time had taken hours.
The thing she needed was sick or needed protecting— round or squirmy— gasping for oxygen his malformed gills struggled to filter or no, that wasn’t it, it was small and smooth and hidden in the weeds where they decayed, smeared with silt and barnacles and painted ever-so-carefully to look like a harmless, inedible rock.
It was hard to focus on. She knew it as a tightness under her breastbone, a stinging in her eyes. As anxiety that clouded her mind and urged her back, back, we have to hurry. It had been too long. She had been gone too long.

The Codfather’s loose shirt is gone now, and while Scott certainly hadn’t expected that level of muscle definition, that isn’t what he’s focused on. Jimmy’s torso is littered with scars. They’re all over, some large and others tiny, some an aged white and others a shiny red. He gapes at them, confused—what had happened? Is the sea really that dangerous? He knows Jimmy’s clumsy, does it justify this?
“What happened to you?” he blurts out, and Jimmy turns to him, face a picture of confusion, before his eyes follow Scott’s gaze. Comprehension dawns and his face closes off.
“You know how it is,” he says coolly, and Scott is pretty sure he does not, in fact, know how it is.

Grian was moving before he even realized it. There was a difference between anyone using his Name with Intention and his nestmates using it in that way. For anyone else, he would go to check and make sure they were ok. Maybe lecture them on using his Name only for emergencies—like any of them would ever mess with something as important as his Name—but that was the extent of it. It was an entirely different story with his nestmates. When his nestmates used his Name like that, it meant war. It meant that Grian would tear apart whoever had made them afraid enough to call on him. He would destroy them in every way possible till not even their souls were free from the terrible grasp of the Deep End and the Beyond.

Summary
A harsh kick was delivered to his spine, and the rope was wedged between his teeth, tied snugly around the back of his head. Footsteps moved around him, and Jimmy raised his head to let out a desperate growl, to glance over at the Star Hunter, to try and twist out of his bonds, hearing the people who pillaged his town laugh and load their guns- coders, he was going to have to listen to his citizens, his people die, while he was powerless and tied up.
There was a cackle, and the sound of a gun being loaded- multiple guns, in fact- and someone’s shout of surprise, like they had just seen something. A whimper, closer to a desperate sob, escaped from Jimmy’s mouth just before-
The impact.
The last thing he heard before the thing, large and winged, hit the ground just in front of him, sending dust and gunpowder and smoke swirling with flashes of deep green and gold and white, was the sound of a gun’s hammer clicking into place, and an unnatural screech of anger echoing off the towering rocks above.
Or, Jimmy promised to stop worshiping Joel. Many things are endangered. Without realizing, he falls back on old traditions. An angry god is not one to be trifled with. Old wounds are healing over.

Joel was driving him to his very limit. Correction, he already had.
Nails digging into the pillow, he held onto it like a lifeline. Just a few moments longer and Joel would return home, dissatisfied that he hadn’t taken the bait. And he would be back in a day or two to try again with some other way of pushing his buttons exactly the way he knew how to.
It drove him nuts. He couldn’t close an eye or someone laughed at it. He couldn’t build a thing or someone would reference Toy Story. He couldn’t make a step or he was made out to be a toy. Something to play with. Something to mess with.
Why did they have to pick on him of all people? Wasn’t it enough that he seemed to have an ongoing streak of bad luck that had been lasting for a few years now? Wasn’t it enough that he was dubbed the canary, the omen of bad luck?
No, they just had to rub it in his face. Again and again, and again, and again.

Summary
Jimmy has a hard time remembering things. He knows he wasn’t always this small. He knows he wasn’t always in a cage. He knows he used to have a family.
Jimmy lets out a small chirp.
He used to be louder, nosier, but he can’t muster the energy anymore. It’s too cold and dark down here, and there's been this strange smell that hurts Jimmy’s head and makes it hard for him to see straight.
Jimmy’s headache becomes more pronounced. He lets out another soft chirp, sagging against the metal bars of his cage. He tries to stay upright, but he loses his grip on his perch and falls down to the bottom of his cage.
He tries to turn his head, to let out some sort of warning for his Miner, but something feels too heavy and constricting on his lungs and he can’t make a sound.
When he focuses back up at the ceiling, he feels like he’s flying - soaring once more, without the restriction of his cage.
He’s flying, and everything goes dark.
In which Jimmy is a canary hybrid trapped in his canary form

“Jimmy! What were you thinking?” Fwhip scolded, after pulling Jimmy away from a lava lake, rushing to apply burn cream and wrap his arms up. They were burnt, blistering and red, but the sheriff didn’t feel any pain.
“I didn't notice.” He mumbled, somewhat unsure. He was burnt badly, but didn’t feel it at all.
“You didn’t notice?” Fwhip practically screamed. “What do you mean you didn’t notice? Are you in shock? Sit down, don’t move, I’ll get a healing potion!” He quickly rushed to his storage rooms, leaving Jimmy to think.
That's when he realized he could no longer feel pain.
