For the first time since last winter, Techno pulled out his fur coat before this walk. He didn’t need it. But he wanted it. Maybe for intimidation. Maybe so that he could grip its fibers tight so that his nervousness wasn't visible.
Logically, there was little for him to worry about. He was sure he was stronger than the fox, and he had his hunting dagger at his waist. But it really wasn't that, was it?

Seven years later, Wilbur was staring at Tommy in disbelief, his hand clutched to his stomach as he felt Tommy’s pain. His legs gave out from under him, onto the same floor Tommy had silently almost-died on, and cried out in desperation. “Tommy! Tell me it didn’t hurt this much for you!”
Tommy sighed sadly, his lungs tight, “I tried to tell you. You told me to grow up.”
And Wilbur remembered.-

Summary
The child was whimpering softly, hands curled tightly into Steve's fur while the wolf licked his face gently. He wasn't much of a sight, hair that could have been blond was matted with mud and leaves, and his torn shirt and trousers did nothing to shield him from the unrelenting wind. Techno could see him shivering from where he was standing, his whole body shaking.
But the biggest concern was the trap that securely snapped around the child's leg, a few inches above the ankle. Techno couldn't help but wince at the way the metal jaws punctured deep into the skin, a concerning amount of blood pooling around the wound, and a tiny amount of the whiteness of bone peeking through.
One wrong move and the child's leg would be snapped clean in half.

He smiled shyly. “Like you. And pigs. And nest days.”
Techno swallowed.
“Well,” he said, clearing his throat, “we’ve got plenty of chickens. And pigs. And you’ve got your nest.”
Tommy brightened. “And you.”
“Yeah.” Techno reached over and gave the top of his head a gentle ruffle, fingers brushing through downy feathers. “You’ve got me too.”

Although Phil didn’t want to take his eyes off of the two people in front of him, he shouted back to the kidnapped person, “Hey mate, do you know why these dumbasses kidnapped you?”
There was a heavy pause before a hoarse voice asked, “Wait, are you talking to me?”
Phil briefly glanced over his shoulder at the figure. He was hanging upside down, his hands tied behind his back and feet bound with chains.
“Yes, I’m talking to you, the guy hanging from the fucking ceiling. Why did these guys kidnap you?”
“I don’t know! I’ve never seen them before in my life!” The guy cried out. “Please get me out of here I’ve been tied up for-”
“Don’t worry. I’m gonna get you out,” Phil said, earning himself a sharp look from the person he was still pointing his sword at. “Consider it payment for breaking my window.”
or, as a mercenary in the nuclear wasteland, Phil has met quite a few interesting people in his day. Now with two kids in his care, he has to be more careful about who he gives his trust to than ever before.

“You talk like an old lady,” the girl complains, the gravity of Tommy’s words falling on deaf ears, but he doesn’t mind. She’ll learn. “But you’re not wrinkly yet."
He props his face up on the flat of his palm. “Just tellin’ my story, man.”
“Please don’t get old, Tommy from the Woods,” she adds in a very serious voice. “You’ll get all slow and boring and then you won’t be any fun anymore.”
If slow and boring is the worst case scenario awaiting him after all of it, Tommy thinks it wouldn’t be the worst way to go, but he chuckles and tells her “I’ll do my best” anyway. The girl nods, seemingly satisfied, and leans forward to rest her chin on the arm of Tommy’s armchair, looking up at him.
“D’you ever miss it?” She asks quietly. “Wherever you came from, I mean.”

Summary
It scares Tubbo sometimes, how much he trusts Ranboo, in a way he trusts no one else but Tommy — dangerous levels, the kind of trust that could most definitely get him hurt later down the line, but Ranboo has been around long enough that Tubbo has long grown tired of wondering why they haven’t left yet. He bumps his forehead gently to Ranboo’s and hopes they can feel how much weight there is to this, hopes the feelings he can never articulate in words are visible in how he lays himself bare for them and nobody else.

The door opens almost immediately. “Michael.” Willow tree hands on the piglin’s shoulders, clad in Tubbo’s old winter coat. “Goodness, where’ve you been? You know what we said about straying too far—”
Ranboo stops. Their eyes flare wide.
They’re not that much taller. If anything it looks like they’ve shrunk, hunched over themself, which explains why they don’t hit their head on the doorframe like Tubbo had expected. Their hair is much shorter now, haphazard around their neck like they’d hacked at it with a knife, and the glasses atop the bridge of their nose look to be a newer pair, glittering gold around red-green eyes. There’s a hauntedness about them, maybe, but mainly it’s the soft, worn, lived-in sort of tired in their face. The kind that Tubbo may have known, just for a moment in time, but is now a stranger to once more.
(Their wedding ring is, noticeably, absent from their horns. Tubbo doesn’t feel anything about that. He doesn’t wear his anymore either.)
