Arthur grins at him, waves his chubby hand. "Father!" he says, because he knows he should be formal with his father. There is no Pa here, no Dad or Da.
There's something shiny on his father's head. He points to it. "What's that?"
"Prince Arthur!" hisses the woman holding him, but his father only chuckles. The woman relaxes, just slightly.
"It's a crown, my son. One day, you will wear one just like it."
Arthur tilts his head, curiously. "What colour is it?" He thinks it's grey, just a shade off of the silver of the swords. It's the same silver-grey as half of the household's shiny jewelry, a not quite true silver. He doesn't think he likes it.
"It's gold," says his father. "There's a lot of gold here in Camelot, my son."
Arthur nods his head, and labels that silver-ish colour gold in his mind.
(Or: in a world where you can't see the colour of your soulmate's eyes until you meet them, Arthur can't see gold, and it makes his life as a prince much more difficult.)

Summary

Summary
Merlin defeated the creature easily. He turned away from his fallen foe and back to the boulder blockade he'd trapped Arthur behind. Too late, Merlin saw the King had found his own way out. He had seen... everything.
Arthur didn't look angry. He didn't even seem surprised. Just... hurt. Merlin froze when he saw that Arthur was crying. The King hadn't seemed to notice it yet, his eyes lost and face void of emotion, but tear tracks lined his dust-coated cheeks. Arthur didn't cry. It was a rule he rarely disobeyed, his motto, "No man is worth your tears." It took Merlin a second to understand, but he wasn't angry... he was heartbroken.
Arthur discovers Merlin's magic. Realising that nearly everyone close to him has betrayed him, Arthur blames himself and obsesses over being a perfect king. He finally taps into his potential, follows his beliefs, and becomes the man that he was meant to be. Arthur also discovers he's not what he thought he was and begins keeping secrets of his own. Summary
A series of oneshots written for every episode of BBC Merlin as I rewatch it. This series has been on hiatus for more than a year so I'm happy to announce that it no longer is! I will however not post regularly, except for probably these last few months of 2022 because it's the 10th anniversary since s5 aired and I'll most likely be rewatching it and probably writing fics for it too. (And yes, that means I'm skipping the rest of s2, s3 and s4, but I'll get back to them later.) I haven't seen s5 since it aired, but I think a decade of waiting has been enough, so let's celebrate the anniversary :D
