About a decade after the end of the Yeerk-Human War, cable TV releases a sitcom called A-Town. It's about an ordinary nuclear family living in Southern California during the war: the mom's a pediatrician, the dad's a writer, the daughter left the lacrosse team to join a sketchy nonprofit called The Gathering, and the son is leading a secret resistance movement of animal shapeshifters trying to fight the alien invasion.

Tom isn’t quite sure how he ended up helping Eva run a support group for ex-hosts, or why his high school crush is still interested in him given their complicated history, or how he managed to become so fascinating to tabloid reporters, or why Jake feels the need to feel guilty for so many things that are not his fault.

Marco is Visser Two, and of course this means that he lies. All the vissers have secrets, but none so much as Marco; he lies to all of them, every single conversation, and even still they don't suspect a thing. Even Visser One trusts him, to some extent, and no one gets past Visser One.
The truth is that Marco does not want the invasion to be successful. He doesn't want an invasion at all, really. And he lies every day, saying that he does. He lies every day, pretending to be a visser and filling up the role. But the truth is much more than all that. The truth is that Marco, despite what he has the entire Yeerk empire thinking, is not really a visser.
Or a Controller, for that matter.
