A ninja is supposed to be cold, unfeeling, and able to get any job done without attachments. Splinter knew that, and that is how he tried to raise his sons. He didn't believe that they should have the emotions that he, himself, saw as a weakness.
Every time they did something out of his control, he would punish them. Even from a young age, the turtles knew better than to smile, laugh, or speak out of line.

The turtles discover a new enemy. One that they hadn't been expecting. This wasn't a mutant with new powers, or demonic armor wanting to harness their life power, nor was it an alien race wanting to decimate their world. It was the humans they were trying to protect.
