Summary
Matthew Holt’s intention had never been to be placed within the hard confines of a mental ward. His intention had been to, well, die.
Takashi Shirogane didn’t have any intentions. If he had any prior to the crash, he didn’t remember them.
Neither boy had planned to spend the beginnings of their respective senior years admitted into the bright white and teal hallways of the “esteemed and recommend Altean Rehabilitation Center.”After a horrific car crash coming home from his last summer vacation with his family, Shiro is left without them, a home, and only two friends. He has memories of none of them.
Matt has had demons living inside the confines of his mind for as long as he can remember conscious thoughts. A particularly bad spell has him on a bathroom floor with a stomach that needed pumping and gashes that needed stitching.
Both incidents lead to Altea in August, right as the leaves start their slow change over and a new season begins with the promise of healing. But sometimes healing isn’t a straight-lined process. Sometimes you need a hand to guide you, or maybe just one to clutch onto. To know you’re not alone.

“Hello, is this Lance McClain?” A female voice came through, talking in a dull, bored tone.
“Uh… Yeah? Is this a bill collector or something because as far as I know I’m not behind on an-"
The woman giggles. “I am not a bill collector Mr. McClain. I am a personal assistant.”
“O…kay?” Lance fidgeted, then started walking again. Coffee sounding better than ever on his confused brain. “Well how can I help you Miss Personal Assistant?”
“My employer would like to meet with you. He says he has something to discuss and is willing to pay for your dinner if you will agree to hear him out.” The woman sounded bored again, rhythmic clicking in the background telling Lance she was typing on a computer.
“Why me?” Lance’s frown deepened as he moved up in line. “I don’t even know anyone with a personal assistant.”
“Mister Shirogane said he will explain everything to you should you agree to meet with him. He said some nonsense about tater tots and pinky promises.” She sounded amused again.
“Shirogane?” Tapping on the back of his phone he thought. “I don’t- wait! Does he go by Shiro?”
“Only by people he likes.” The woman laughed. “He has an opening tonight at 5:30, will this work for you?”

Shiro looks down at the small back of a boy that’s nowhere taller than him–the blue tunic almost looks too big on him, and the black, windswept hair hides his features as he bows down.
If Shiro did not know it’s less to protect than to supervise him, make sure he stays away from the things he likes and turns more towards the things they would like him to do, he’d probably welcome a companion. The castle is lonely, sometimes.
He folds his arms, glaring aggressively. They will see if that stupid guard of his will be able to follow him.

“You held your own well against those boys. I almost didn’t step in.”

“Maybe so. It’d have hurt more, though.”
“I’m not afraid.”

The boy nods to the sword. “You were pretty good even without that.”
“A knight’s got to be prepared for anything he might face."
The boy snorts. “You could have finished it a lot faster if you just drew your blade.”
Shiro frowns. “They were unarmed. That’s not what my blade is for.”
The tiefling tosses his head. “Chivalry like that’ll just get you killed.” He says it with an air that says he thinks Shiro’s the type to willingly sacrifice his life before his honor. Like he’s seen that kind before.
Shiro isn’t the sort of knight to live only by a code of manners, though. He has a duty and a mission, an end goal.
“If my life were in danger, I’d have drawn the blade.”
