It was the kind of moments she lived for when she saw Daisy in the field, things with many teeth and eyes and faces in front of her, bloody knife clenched in her fists like an exorcist holds a cross and looking at her, directly at her. Basira was never quite sure if the glistening at the corners of her eyes was sweat or tears but in the end it didn’t matter because it was only when Daisy was hunting, when she had brought her kill down that she saw the mask break and light shine through. She looked more alive than Basira had seen her look in months.

And he had woken up just yesterday so happy and unawares. Oh yeah, looks like he was just catching a bit of a cold, he felt a bit tired but it’s fine, not the weirdest thing to happen at the camp. There was the plan with Dolly, which he really needed to be there for right now and everything was fine.
And then today he had woken up late and started sobbing because he couldn’t find his favourite raccoon tail and it had all spiralled downhill from there.

It's been sixteen months since then. Basira got a flat again but she was barely anything at that point, nobody for it to even be a home for. And now she's packing up, and Georgie and Melanie will be here any second, and it'll be their home. So she can seem like she didn't just wake up half an hour ago, she grabs a permanent marker and a roll of masking tape and starts to pack everything up. Honestly, she's got enough that she could just put most of it in a backpack and put the two boxes of books she's already packed as well as the disassembled bookshelf in Georgie's car. But it'll be easier to eventually unpack if she actually takes the time to learn what she's leaving....
In which Basira finally has a home, and this one she shouldn't be afraid to lose.

“Yeah, I mean, I…” he tries to run a hand through the tangles of it and gets caught on a clump of old dirt. “It’s probably been well over a year, maybe two–” the Eye tells him it’s been seven hundred and three days, though he’s aware enough not to volunteer it this time. “With the kidnappings, then my coma, and trying to get a handle of, um, who I am now.” He doesn’t want to talk more about getting a handle on things, so he responds with an equal comment. “Yours, too, Daisy. It’s almost to your shoulders.” She echoes his gesture, reaching for her hair, and it’s just tangles grown in with dirt. Daisy’s been putting this off. This fits the bill of just trying to survive, right? So why can’t she?
OR,
Jon and Daisy are starting to think that here, with each other, they might be able to survive this. Getting that dirt out of their hair's a great first step.
