“If I'm being perfectly honest…I – haven't had a date in quite a while. Can't say I'm very good at – this.”
Martin doesn't move closer, simply holding Jon by the waist with his drink in hand.
“I dunno, I think you're doing really well.” He flashes Jon a smile, the recessed lights overhead glinting across sharp incisors. Certainly new additions, but somehow they still suit him. They're almost cute.
Still, Jon's throat grows tight at the sight of them, conjuring images that he isn't entirely sure are all his own. He hasn't been sure of a good many things as of late.

Jon starts to reply before another flash of light catches both of their attention. They turn to look west, just spotting the bright streak that splinters down from the sky. The clouds rolling towards them are dark. Massive walls pushing towards them at a constant speed, shutting out the light from above.
Then he starts to count.
One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Si-
The thunder boomed, and Martin stops, looking down to Jon, who had flinched violently at the sound. Only a mile away, give or take. If the wind is blowing the clouds in this direction, should only be a few more minutes before they’re caught in the downpour.

“Lonely,” Jon finished for him.
“Yeah.” Martin raised the damp towel to Jon’s forehead. Gentler this time, he began to wipe away the blood and grime. “But if you think no one will care if you get hurt, then you’re wrong.”
Jon lifted his hand as though to hold Martin’s hand in place, then thought better of it and lowered it into his lap. “Right.”
“And if you go back into that coffin, I’m climbing in after you and pulling you back out.”
Jon glanced up, the ghost of a smile playing on his lips. He looked small, and frail, and so, so tired. Martin could feel his carefully-curated numbness slip away as his heart clenched at the sight.
“When was the last time you ate?” he asked. Old habits die hard.
“I-I don’t know. It didn’t matter so much, in the Buried.”
“Well, you’re not in the Buried anymore. C’mon.”
When Jon gets out of the Buried, he and Martin have a talk.

“You sure about this?” Daisy asked, once again, and once again Jon nodded.
“I can’t make it pretty.”
Jon laughed. “It can’t look any worse than it does now.”
He would miss his long hair. He’d always liked the way it looked. It seemed to soften his features, and he needed that more than ever now. The dark circles under his eyes were a permanent feature these days, and the one-two punch of his coma followed swiftly by his time in the Buried had left him looking unsettlingly gaunt. He doubted his new haircut was going to suit him.
Daisy’s suited her. She’d chopped it all off as soon as she got out, cutting away the hair she’d grown in the Buried and then some. It was a far from professional cut (and didn’t speak wonders for how Jon’s hair would look) but it set off her sharp, angular face quite nicely.
Jon gets a haircut. It's a much more difficult process than he's expecting.

Summary
Jon stayed quiet for a long time, once Martin had updated him up to that point, so much so that Martin took a second to take the phone away from his ear and glance at the screen, just to make sure the call hadn’t dropped during his stammered monologue.
“...Martin.”
“Look, I know!” Martin snapped, a little plaintive, before Jon could prime himself up for a scolding. He was very, very good at those. “I know. You told me it was a bad idea to go back there at night, alone, but-- This is just what we do here, ok? It’s our job, for how unconventional it might be--”
“Breaking and entering is your job?” Jon asked, and the bare hint of amusement in his voice felt like a pleasant summer breeze. “I could’ve sworn you said something about archiving.”
“Jon,” Martin muttered, his annoyance more for show than anything else. It still landed as intended, making Jon chuckle warmly in his ear.

They all agreed not to get Tommy involved until he was ready.
Turns out Wilbur and Techno didn’t actually care about that agreement and started teaching their younger brother the ‘tricks of the trade’ years ago and Phil is just now finding out about this. Who in the world teaches a 14 year old how to hot-wire a car?
