Summary
The honden was the most sacred place within a kami’s shrine. Their unexpected presence would be the cause for rumors to circulate for years to come, especially when the story of how they got there and what came after was too enticing to leave midway through another’s recount.
By listening entirely, one could learn that there was something more abhorrent than an intruder within the sacred honden. It was by listening that they would learn that the shrine’s kami, a tempestuous spirit, had taken mortal form to lie beside the Accursed King, a personified calamity, each night for an uninterrupted slumber...
