“It doesn’t bother me. I would get terribly bored if I slept for as long as you three do! It’d be like–oh, it’d be like putting Ben on shore leave for a few months.” Jamie does have to laugh at that. The way Ben acts around the TARDIS sometimes, it seems he’s still trying to assemble a crew and pretend they’re seafaring, not timefaring. “Besides, there’s plenty to keep me occupied.” The Doctor gives Jamie a warm look, like they’re sharing a secret. “You know how much tending to the TARDIS needs.”
Jamie could prod back that the Doctor himself is probably the cause of half of the problems that need tending to, but instead he purses his lips and searches the Doctor’s gaze.
“Doesn’t it get lonely?”

Summary
Either his body would rot here, in this alley, picked at by rats – or it would be found by their enemies, and God only knew what would happen then. This wasn’t like a war. Not any sort of proper war, anyway. There would be nobody to report him dead. Nobody to write home and tell the Doctor what had happened. He would just vanish, and that would be the end of it.
How long would the Doctor wait? How many days would he sit by the communicator, fingers twitching in anticipation, ready to pick up a call? How long would it take for him to give up?
How long would it take for him and Victoria to fly away, stepping into the TARDIS with no thought of ever returning?
An adventure goes terribly wrong, and Jamie just wants to hear the Doctor's voice one more time.

Canon divergence in "Not What He Seems". A take on the Drifting Stars au where Dipper falls into the portal instead.
"Shoulders hunched up to his ears, Dipper looks around for any sign of life. Aside from the screeching of monsters, of course. He gets the feeling he wants to avoid those. He wipes his front off, kicking dust into the air. He coughs as some of it gets caught in his throat, and he squints at the red, glowing sky. The hairs on his arms stand on end as he looks into the red and orange void, and a wave of dizziness washes over him momentarily. He lifts a hand to rest it on the side of his head.
'Mabel?' he calls out, quietly. Despite the low volume, his voice still echoes, somehow heard over the roaring of the creatures hiding in the distance. He swallows heavily, his heart in the back of his throat. 'Soos?' He hesitates, afraid to say the name, 'Grunkle Stan?'
No answers."
