“You know, the word ‘captive’ implies that your incarceration is wrongful rather than the collective will of the world,” L mused, monotone, and saw Light’s eyes darken. “I believe ‘prisoner’ is a more accurate term, as it implies that you have committed a crime and have thus been removed from society for the safety of your peers.” L blinked, thumb working on his bottom lip. “But perhaps Light-kun does not like the word ‘prisoner,’ as it’s rather predictive of sudden death by myocardial infarction.”
L yanked it out, stick his tongue out as his face twisted at the unpleasant taste. Disgusted, and bitterly accused, “It doesn’t taste sweet.”
Light sputtered, furious, “Of course it doesn’t!”
“But it should,” L sulked. “The pineapples were supposed to help.” Then he blinked, eyes wide, as if something momentous had occurred to him. “But wait, how does Light-kun know semen is not supposed to be sweet?”
Light eyes widened, sputtering. “You—that’s just common knowledge!”
L gave him a doubtful look, implying that it hadn’t been common knowledge to him.
Light ground his teeth furiously. “You—I knew there was something off about the pineapples, you bastard.”
“Light-kun isn’t the only one with plans,” L said, bored.
“Was Light-kun not planning the same thing?” L asked, unrepentant. “Perhaps if you were a bit smarter, it would be you inside me this time.”
“Fuck you—“ the words were out before Light could stop himself. He went stiff.
The bastard didn’t spare him, smiling blankly as he said, almost condescending, “Yes, Light-kun, that’s what you’re doing.”
Awake by that point, L sat against one side of the tub, legs to his chest, and formed the suds into a little bubble-person village. Light lay back against the across from him, arms hanging off the sides of the tub, head pillowed by a towel.
“This one,” L said, pointing towards one of the bubble people. “Is the killer.”
“No,” Light said, eyes opening just a sliver. “She has an alibi. She was being formed when your first one fell.”
“Because she stole his bubbles,” L insisted. “That’s why he collapsed into the water and died.”
“But you did that, when you were making her,” Light said, tauntingly. “So technically, you killed him. That’s her alibi.”
L was silent, and for a moment he reflected that sometimes the two of them were truly…ridiculous. Or perhaps more than sometimes.
And then he muttered, “Technically, this is all Light-kun’s fault, for not using enough bath gel. You planned this.”
An insulted scoff, “Don’t blame me for your clumsy fingers.”
L held up said fingers, which were pruning from the water, and suspiciously said, “You didn’t deny planning it, Light-kun. Feeling guilty?”
“No, L,” Light drawled. “If I was conspiring on how to kill bubbles, I’d do it like this.”
And then the bastard waved his hand and sent a slash of water over L’s little bubble village. Drowning them all.
L stared at the corpses for a long moment, and then looked coldly at him. “Murderer.”
“Yes,” Light said, laying back leisurely, a smile on his lips. “Congratulations, detective. You finally have proof of it.”
“Light-kun, I love you,” L whispered. The earth was nearly upon them. “I love you so very much, it’s quite unhealthy of me.”
And then L smiled, his grey eyes glimmering with happiness as this time, they fell together.
“Yeah,” Light said, his own voice softened. “I love you, too. Just like that.”
L’s eyes grew wide–
And Kira smiled, claiming this last victory and submitting to this last loss. “And if you want me to remember it, L Lawliet, then you’d better work hard and make me.”

“Don't feel too bad about it,” he soothes, condescending, “I don't really think you've succeeded at anything important before. You can't let that stop you from trying.”
The hand on Satoru's arm squeezes an increment tighter.
“What?”
Satoru feels his grin curl wider.
Suguru has never been the most cool-headed, when provoked. He's great at looking collected when his rage is burning bright, but in their first year, with Satoru poking and prodding, it was obvious.
When Satoru would ask about the taste of curses and speculate that Suguru was more curse than boy. When he said that he couldn't believe they were both Special Grade when Suguru barely knew anything about jujutsu; Suguru was always the one that threw the first punch.
Satoru has always been a sharp-toothed thing; it's in his nature. His curiosity cuts, his praises fall flat so easily; he has to try. He must sheathe his claws to touch people, must temper his words.
He forgets, more often than not. It's so much to remember when there are so many millions of things to think about.
Provocation has always been a specialty of his; especially when he knows someone.
“You can just forget about it,” Satoru comforts him with a tongue made of needles. “It's how you've always done it before; move on to the next best thing.”
Hoku shivers as Satoru's lips brush his ear. No gauge, he realizes vaguely. The fact is suddenly at the forefront. Why doesn't Hoku have piercings?
“That's just how you are, isn't it? A coward.”
The grip on his arm turns bone-breaking, Suguru's thumb digging mercilessly into the nerve in his wrist. His other hand rises to snatch at the arm holding Satoru's ID with a similar grip as he rises. He pushes Satoru clear so he can move away from the table. Satoru's school ID bounces off the table and clatters to the floor.
Pain burns bright as Suguru crosses his arms in a hold between their chests and tugs Satoru back to him almost immediately.
A cruel, angry dance.
“Coward?” his one and only hisses, “I'm not the one who needed to ask me what to do when you found her. Outsourcing your own decisions. You didn't even care .”
Satoru scoffs even as his brow twitches into a flinch.
“You never cared either,” he accuses, rancor bubbling in his chest, thrill making his heart beat against his ribs like it can reach through the gaps and press to Suguru's own. “You always talked about protecting the weak, but you turned your back the moment it became more than an inconvenience. ” His voice lowers to a whisper only heard by them, “Geto- sama.”
Suguru's brow twitches.
“You—”
“Some people are trying to eat,” a cold voice interjects. The boy with red and white hair is part way out of his seat. The wild-haired boy that had been beside Suguru nods in support, lips pressed flat, into a nervous look.
“Eat somewhere else then, Todoroki,” Suguru commands, a bland smile pulling his mouth into a sharp curve as he turns to look over his shoulder.
The grip on Satoru's wrists twists tighter when he chuckles at Suguru's white knuckled grasp on control.
It's cutting off circulation. His fingers are tingling. There's something wrong with him, he knows it, because all it makes him want to do is press closer to Suguru.
Satoru's forehead leans against Suguru's as he turns back.
“Amanai,” he whispers into the space between them, watching Suguru's shoulders flinch in time with the numb slice it always cuts into Satoru's gut, “the village, your parents. You've always run from it like a coward, always looking for your reason even if you have to make it up to make yourself feel better—you don't know how to be wrong.”
Satoru jerks as Suguru shakes the twist between their chests.
An empty school uniform at the end of the table stands up and walks away, leaving behind an almost full lunch tray.
“ I don't—you think what I did was wrong, but you never stopped me,” Suguru bites out, “I did what I did because I had to, I had to choose between two sides and not all of us can be the— not everyone can be you, unaffected by the struggles of us mere mortals.”
Satoru's heart squeezes.
“Bullshit,” he hisses as his fingertips start to whiten and his hand goes numb. The bones in his wrist grind together.
Pinky's palm presses to Infinity.
“Hey,” she snaps, “Yumedera, you're hurting him.”
Suguru barely glances at her, eyes on Satoru's blindfold.
“What do—”
