Summary
The water is cold when it engulfs him. He struggles against the current and is immediately consumed by a violent sort of fear, a primal emotion that causes a panicked keen to escape him when his head breaks the water. He kicks his legs frantically to try to remain at the surface, sucking down big gulps of air that make his heart pound ever faster. The current pulls at him, even as his hands scrabble for purchase on the riverbed, causing his nails to scratch and break against the wet stone.
Fuck, he thinks placidly. Zoro’s going to be pissed.

Which put Ren in this unenviable position of rejecting someone he very much likes. Martyn is the sweetest, funniest, smartest person Ren knows and he wants so badly to give him gift after gift after gift and make him dinner and have his back in battle and cuddle in bed and … well, that’s the problem. Ren doesn’t want anything more than that.
But Ren is nothing if not a romantic, and he just can’t help the swoop in his belly that he feels every time he sees Martyn. He almost wants to apologize to the man, but he can’t even picture how to do that. “Hey Martyn, I’ve been feeling all strange about you inside and I’m sorry for parasocially crossing your boundaries?” Yeah, right.

They’re all over, some large and others tiny, some an aged white and others a shiny red. He gapes at them, confused—what had happened? Is the sea really that dangerous? He knows Jimmy’s clumsy, does it justify this?
“What happened to you?” he blurts out, and Jimmy turns to him, face a picture of confusion, before his eyes follow Scott’s gaze. Comprehension dawns and his face closes off.
“You know how it is,” he says coolly, and Scott is pretty sure he does not, in fact, know how it is.
