The first two chapters (but especially the second one) are fucking heartwrenching in the most real way. There definitely needs to be a warning for suicidal themes.
Not a happy ending but a hopeful one.
This was the oddest thing to read vibe-wise because it felt both in character and out of character at the same time. But it’s probably one of my favorite things I’ve read in a minute.
I love the dynamics here and I this is probably my favorite Merlin and Morgana friendship I’ve read so far. It felt like what u wanted their friendship to be in the show. (Morgana’s reactions and interactions also felt 100% in character for season one her/before betrayal her.)
I also thought the reactions of the the advisors and the people, their non-issues with magic, were such an interesting take.

Summary
Prince Arthur did not intend to bring Merlin on patrol, he didn’t even know his manservant could ride a horse. But he can’t say no to that grin, not when Merlin has gone and packed and saddled up a horse for himself without asking. It’s a dull, routine patrol along the border, almost a formality at this point. Even if magic is legal in Escetir, they’ve held a shaky peace treaty with Camelot for over a decade; it’s unlikely they’ll see any danger.
But what Arthur does not know is that the recent spike in deaths of magical creatures in Camelot has not gone unnoticed. There are whispers that King Uther is a liar and a hypocrite, now secretly rebuilding his magical defence. And to bring sorcery to the border - well now, that would be an act of aggression tantamount to declaring war.

Summary
It’s been over a year and a half since Arthur died. Or, more accurately, woke up. Technically, he dies in eight and a half years. Well, if he messes up, that is, and he is determined not to.
But Arthur feels the grip of the king tightening with every passing day. Morgana’s magic grows under a father that would not accept it. And if his growing attachment to Guinevere would only bring more harm to her than good, then it should be best to let her go.
Merlin, of course, is of no help while Arthur continues to keep the secret of his resurrection. But should Merlin find out, he fears that his friend will be too young to understand his actions.
So Arthur waits. For it is written that the Once and Future King will take his throne. He only has to decide when.
