Summary
Solarpunk anarchist AU, if that's a thing now, exploring the power vacuum left by Shinra's collapse and the early days of a political and cultural revolution through the medium of introspective character study. In the wake of Meteorfall, those who remain commit to not only rebuilding, but restructuring Gaia's social order in such a way that no similar atrocity can ever happen again - or so they hope. Inevitably, their journeys through living and loving in a new and unfamilar world help them learn a few things about themselves along the way. But as a rapidly escalating cold war develops between the allied autonomous zones and those who seek to return to what came before, will the roots they plant in the ruins prove strong enough to withstand the storm?
Only the original game is considered gospel here, barring a few details and Easter eggs from other titles. But if you like purposefully purple prose, galaxy brain rarepairs, genre-hopping, extremely silly humour, and unabashedly radical politics, you've come to the right place!

“Hey, whoa! Not in front of the kid, Dyne!” He gestured at Marlene, who played in the sand while they enjoyed a lazy morning. “Don’t be a bad influence on her!”
“Tch, this entire Planet is a bad influence.”
Couldn’t argue with that.
After surviving the fire, Barret and Dyne vow to make Shinra pay, but the only thing tougher than fighting against a corrupt corporation is raising a daughter together.
Or 5 times Barret, Dyne, and Marlene were away from home and 1 time they weren’t.

Summary
Late-afternoon crimson sunlight angled in from a small row of windows high on the inner wall, and sparkled off something above. Stretching to relieve some of the tension in his neck at the end of a long day, Barret happened to look up. Otherwise he probably wouldn’t have seen it.
There was a kind of small bump on one of the pipes that hung from the ceiling, reachable from the maintenance workers’ catwalk fifteen feet above.
If Barret knew anything, it was that those pipes didn’t carry water – they were electrical, housing wires. Following the offending pipe with his eyes, he could see it disappeared into a control box on the outer wall. So it was pretty weird to see gunk there – like the kind of buildup you got when a leaking water pipe started to rust.
He pondered, for a minute, whether he should go up there to look at it. It could probably wait until tomorrow – except that tomorrow was Saturday. Still, it could probably wait until Monday.
But—
“Alright,” Barret said aloud.

Barret is working at the newly-opened North Corel Mako Refinery as a safety inspector when he notices something amiss.

In his dreams, he rides across the continent back to Midgar in the flatbed of an old pickup truck beneath the white fire of unconstrained stars. Sometimes, a friend or two rides by his side - to booze up and reminisce and ask him all the questions he could never answer while awake. Tonight, it’s just her - his sweetest apparition, talking about how she could never see the stars in the city with a sadness that could separate salt from water.
“I could never see the stars in the city,” she is whispering. His head is on her shoulder, his face in the warm velvet space just alongside her neck. “I used to be so scared they’d fall on me if they caught me looking. Sometimes I think I have a death wish, but it’s not that, really.”
“What is it?” he asks her softly.
She sighs. “I’ve just never really lived until now and I’m no good at it.”
“I think you’re the best at it,” he admits.(…)
This woman wasn't Aeris, though. Cloud attributed it to his starving braindead state that she looked so familiar and so friendly to him - honey-colored, a Big Apple Selena Quintanilla with a punk rock twist like some of the girls he'd gone to school with back in Colorado - and surely it was because he was staring at her so openly that she was looking back at him, her dark eyes searching his face with a look of belated recognition reflected in them.
