Notes: Stopped halfway, not sure if I’ll continue. Objectively, it written well. The characterizations are really well done. It isn’t a regurgitation of Death in the Family or Under the Red Hood, but also the entire first half is still just standard dysfunctional batfam where no one wants to be 100% honest about their feelings.
I think what makes this doubly annoying is that Jason has the ability to reads minds. He’s aware, at least from Batman’s perspective, how he was after he died and the circumstances that made Tim Robin. And despite all this, he still continues with his canon crusade.
And because it’s sticking so close to this aspect of canon, it also sufferers from the same thing that canon does. At this point, DC wanted Jason to be a villain, but the fandom saw him more of anti-hero. As such, most fics intend for him to be seen as an a tire hero while continuing to write him the same way DC did when they wanted him to be a villian. It’s frustrating in canon and it’s frustrating here.
Just let them talk like adults.
Also, I like cosmic horror. I’ve read a lot of it, but so far this is so mild that it barely constitutes it tbqh. At least not in the way it’s described or even what happens. It doesn’t really feel like he’s been taken over by a cosmic entity. Not even when he attacked Gorilla Grodd’s mind. I don’t get the sense of the existential dread that you usually get when reading cosmic horror.
There events can also feel monotonous at times on top of everything else.
