Ten months later, Prince Arthur returns from a mission to a crime-infested city and disarrayed court, with King Uther paralysed by grief over Morgana’s death. Summary
Lancelot stared at him with deep eyes heavy with sympathy and sadness, "What if a day comes, when both magic and medicine are not enough to save a life, What if Arthur died? What would become of you Merlin? i dread such a day and pray to never live and witness it."
..
Merlin always knew that he could risk anything if he has to if it could save Arthur's life , he was always sure that there would be no limit to what he might sacrifice , himself included.
An enlightening conversation to how Merlin turned into a morally grey character by s5.

Summary
“My friends are my hoard,” Merlin groaned into the table his face was slammed on and Gaius raised an unimpressed eyebrow.
“Is this you just now realising it, or just you finally admitting it?” He asked and Merlin raised his head and glared at him.
“Gaius, how am I meant to deal with this? I mean, they’ve already asked me so many questions! And today-! I accidentally revealed to Percy my magic!” Merlin complains.

It's been five years since Merlin became a dragonlord and now he's going through "dragonlord puberty." He grows wings, talons and fangs and gets Dragon-like behavior, such as collecting a hoard.
Which would be all fine and dandy except that Merlin's inner dragon decided to hoard his friends and now Merlin has to hope none of them notice his strange behaviours.

Summary
The Prince still stares at the Throne, occasionally throwing a glance to the crown next to it and Merlin does what he always does when Arthur is bothered by something, he does something so treasonous that he’s forced to shout at Merlin rather than stew in his own thoughts. Quickly striding up the short three steps and across the platform, Merlin throws himself down on the Throne, a violent act of treason. Arthur is merely staring at him as though he is the stupidest and most astounding person he’s seen. “What- Merlin what on earth are you doing? You cannot sit there, even the stupidest of people know that!” Merlin shrugs, stretching out like a cat.
“It’s just a chair Arthur,”
“It’s the bloody Throne!”
“A fancy chair then,”Or; Arthurs scared of the Throne and becoming a king, Merlin decides to remind him it's merely furniture
Or or; I have an unhealthy obsession with Throne and Crown scenes.

Summary
"I couldn’t let him die of a wound caused by my kin,” Balinor explained, each word expressed deliberately, as if each syllable he said was carefully thought out, “I couldn’t let someone you clearly were so… fond of…” he seemed to trail off.
Merlin caught up to what his father was implying and his eyes went wide, “Fond? Oh, no, you’ve misunderstood– you’ve got– you’ve figured it wrong!” Merlin spoke fast, tripping over his own words, awkward laugh sounding forced, “Me– me and Arthur? Arthur? That’s laughable! That’s–” he shook his head. Arthur, the prat? The clotpole, the turnip-cabbage-vegetable, the dollophead? Sure, he may be the other side of his coin, but Merlin was much shinier, dammit! “I’m much shinier!”
“You’re much…” Balinor (his father, he reminded himself) shot him a quizzical look, “...shinier?”

Summary
The thing is: Merlin thought – with the kind of naïve hope he hasn't allowed himself since Morgana's betrayal – that putting his big secret out in the open, hearing Arthur decide to repeal the ban on magic, being freed of years and years of subterfuge, and so on and so forth, would actually bring him relief. And yet here he is, weeks later, unable to sleep because he's waiting for the other shoe to drop.
Merlin can't sleep, so he decides to try out some spells. Arthur watches.
