Just because it is broken doesn’t mean it cannot be fixed. Perhaps they are shattered; scattered in a thousand interchangeable pieces on the floor. Even so, with enough practiced patience, enough time, dedication, love—they can be fixed yet. George will spend the rest of his life painting each crack with gold until they are so beautiful, until they shine so brightly in the daylight that perhaps they realize being broken was a good thing.
Perhaps they are stronger, once broken.
Maybe things won’t ever be the same again. Maybe that’s a good thing, too.
Kintsugi (金継ぎ, "golden joinery"), also known as kintsukuroi (金繕い, "golden repair"), is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery by mending the areas of breakage with lacquer dusted or mixed with powdered gold, silver, or platinum; the method is similar to the maki-e technique. He stares at Karl a lot. Karl is… pretty. He’s too pretty, almost, like, the kind of pretty that should be illegal for a boy to be, because it makes Sapnap question all sorts of things about himself. The kind of pretty that almost hurts, with those downturned raincloud eyes that make him look just a little sad even when he isn’t, and that shy, private smile, the one that has made Sapnap feel all gooey and melty inside right from day one. The one nobody else gets to see, not quite the way he is allowed to, on late night calls when neither of them want to say goodbye, or here, alone and sheltered from the world, on Karl’s back terrace where time seems to slow just for the two of them.
Or, Sapnap is trans, but more importantly, he is head over heels in love with his friend Karl.

Blocking out the screams of his family as the flames charred their skin and they fell into the sleep of death. Ranboo hit the ground with a thud and a cry. He lay there in the wet grass of the front lawn, watching as his room exploded out in flames, the glass shattering and creating a rain of the sharp material.

Karl opened their mouth to tell him, to have him adjust his hold or to let go, just that they couldn’t breathe in general, but nothing would come out. They didn’t have the air.
“S-ap-!” Karl gasped, violet eyes widening in fear as they frantically tapped Sapnap’s wrist, “I can’t- Can’t breathe-!”
Nothing happened. Sapnap was still just standing there, smiling at them like nothing was wrong. Terror gripped Karl’s heart as they started to hyperventilate— Or at least, they would have if they could have gotten enough air. They started hitting against Sapnap’s arm, words becoming too difficult to use as they started getting less and less oxygen. Karl’s eyes filled with tears as they stared at their friend, desperately trying to get him to understand that he was hurting them, that they were scared and then-
Then he started laughing.

“You said violets are important to you.” Karl picks one of the small flowers off the stem. “So here. Can I?” Sapnap nods as they reach their hand up to tuck the flower behind his ear. “Perfect,” they smile which makes Sapnap’s heart flutter.
“You have a pretty smile,” he blurts out absentmindedly, instantly regretting it.
Karl laughs and Sapanp can tell that they are biting back their tongue. “Thank you,” they mutter quietly. “So do you.”
Sapnap hates parties. But maybe this last party Dream made him go to wasn't so bad, seeing as he met Karl, who turns out to be the most wonderful person he's ever met.

Karl takes a few more shots at different angles, opting to take one where you can see Clay’s face which highlights the dust of blush that hides under freckled cheekbones and makes the fangs that peek out underneath chapped lips that much more visible.
In reality, Karl just wanted to capture all of Clay’s beauty in one photo - they wished they could.
“You are really pretty.” Karl’s answer is gentle, the smile on their lips wide as they looked at the photo they got, turning to show Clay with a wide smile. “Thank you for letting me do that.”
