Dazai is ready to flee, but there’s nowhere to run unless he intends to shove himself into the air vent or attempt to drown himself in the toilet. “Don’t play this game with me. You can lie to everyone else out there,” she gestures vaguely towards the door, “but you two don’t get to do this with me. If there’s something that has that high of a chance of success, I need to know why we aren’t doing it.”

"What is going on, president?" Tanizaki inquired.
"I was just on the phone with Mori-sensei." Fukuzawa started, glancing at Atsushi, before closing his eyes. "He made up his mind on which member of the Agency is going to be transferred to the Port Mafia."
Atsushi tensed. A member of the Agency, transferred to the Port Mafia? Since when was that ever stated? Atsushi didn't even know about this until now, and he felt even more unnerved.
Tanizaki's lips slanted into a thin line, a crease forming between his brows. "...Who?" he questioned.
Fukuzawa's eyes fluttered open and zeroed in on Atsushi, as if staring into his soul.
"Atsushi."
He was transferred over to the Port Mafia?
He was going to be a member of the Port Mafia?
He had to commit crimes and go against his own morality?
Or-- Atsushi is the one who is transferred to the Port Mafia, challenging his morality and his purpose. At the same time, Akutagawa's lung disease was progressively getting worse and left him with only a few months left.

Tachihara looked at him with an unrecognizable expression on his face.
Junichiro Tanizaki was an agency member, one of the good ones at that. He hasn't tried to hook up with a mafioso, or a guild member, or a fellow detective. He didn't disappear for hours a week to come back saying his latest attempt at suicide didn't word, and he did all his paperwork.
(That's how (most) of the agency saw him. Tanizaki was pretty sure Ranpo saw through his "normal, good worker" act.)
So how did he end up opposite a hunting dog, trying to keep his face devoid of emotion?

“What are you doing?” a voice asks from somewhere nearby, a familiar sound. It sends a wave of warmth down Dazai’s body, releasing the icy grip the ocean had on his heart.
“What do you think I’m doing?” Dazai responds, his mouth curving into a smile.
“If you’re thinking about jumping in…” the voice replies, trailing off. “You know my opinion on that.”
Dazai opens his eyes. If he turns to his right, he will find a boy with a warm smile and eyes made of sunset. A smile is still on his face, ready to mirror Atsushi’s own, a rare one that doesn’t feel foreign on his face like a mask. His heart beats a little harder in his chest, a little faster, waking him back to life. He turns—
No one is there.
After Atsushi confesses to Dazai that he used to see visions of him during his moments of doubt, Dazai starts experiencing visions of Atsushi as well. He doesn’t cope with it well.

In the end, it took a very short amount of time for his coworkers to warm up to Akutagawa. Maybe Atsushi shouldn't have been surprised—the Agency had a habit of befriending those from rival groups. Lucy and Kyouka were proof of that. Even Dazai had once been an enemy to the Armed Detective Agency. And he was pretty sure Sigma was joining, too.
So, yes, having a mafioso around was nothing new. Just… Akutagawa, of all people?
