it was all Ruby could think as she ran, ran as fast as she could, ran away from her other half across Dulcington and towards whatever fresh hell awaited her at Castle Candy.
She felt as the locket of the sweetest heart grew colder and colder against her chest and finally faded away to just a plain old metal heart, mocking her, taunting her. It was no longer full of the life and vibrance of her other half, reassurance always with her, the sense that she was never alone.

Summary

He sets them on his shoulders with practised ease and their laughing pitters away. She looks up to see them begin walking back up the road, where the chocolate rabbit waits in a slim patch of shade not occupied by the crowd.
‘Are you going to melt, Lapin?’ one of the girls says with the morbid cheer of a child.
‘Indeed.’ Responds the rabbit, Chancellor Lapin Cadbury, in a droning voice. ‘I shall perish on the streets.’
The girls gasp and the royal guard scolds the rabbit, who looks up at him with such a challenging look of boredom it’s a wonder the guard keeps his cool. They begin bickering as they leave.
