Summary
What did it mean to live? To love and to lose so much that the two become interchangeable inside of the heart, to learn to read the ways that it jumped and sputtered with tears that belonged to every thought and feeling that ran through your fingertips from where they pressed against another's? Was it to fear? Was it to be used until there was no more to be given, obsolete and replaced by another? Or was it to sit in the silence of your dreams, awaiting for the sweet relief of exhaustion so potent you forget or the warmth of someone's head pillowed against your shoulder like there was nothing kinder in the world than that of the space you breathed together, petals dancing in your lungs?
In all honesty, Iruka didn't know. Life was something that had no right answer, no rules or reason but to be. As a teacher, having no clear answer frustrated him to no end. When he takes in the faces of those he loves, though, he supposed that perhaps this was the small mercy of it all.
But that in itself was an answer of its own, wasn't it?
(In which Iruka and Kakashi meet much earlier than they should and it changes both everything and nothing at all, shown through a series of snapshots.)

Konoha 13 growing into the badass new generation we know and love.
Itachi fighting fate as usual but this time maybe, just maybe securing a future for himself and everyone he already sacrificed so much for.
And Kakashi, growing into a functional human being, stepping up in his role as teacher, embracing his new family (and totally embracing Iruka-sensei somewhere in there) and having to fight the world to the death to be able to keep any of these good things life offered him - as usual.- Words:
