“Earthquake?!” Meryl exclaims, already using her lack of balance as momentum to keep moving.
“No, this is–” Vash says, interrupted yet again by the pincers rising from the sand like pillars erected as milestones. Meryl manages to dash towards the younger kid, as the sand starts to scatter into the air, clouding his vision. Slowly rising a final time before the surface tension bursts, he manages to see the older brother clutching his hat, glancing from side to side in some desperate search as Roberto sees frustration creep up his face.
“Damned wenuts” he hears him curse loudly as the pressure of the mound finally breaks, and they sink in with the pile of sand.

“I like you,” he says and Scaramouche just breathes. “You're really pretty.”
“You don't really know me that well, do you?” he muses and smiles a little. “A mysterious foreign exchange student. Who’s to say I'm not dangerous? Maybe I've manipulated you.”
He smiles the entire time as he says it though, not wanting Sethos to think it might be true. It could be, but it isn't. Sethos smiles back.
“Then I wouldn't care. I’d let myself get manipulated.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah,” he breathes and he's looking down at Scaramouche’s lips.
“That's not very smart,” he whispers and watches, almost in slow motion, as Sethos reaches out a hand and brushes his fingers against Scaramouche’s cheekbone. His fingers are warm in the chilly night.
“I know,” he breathes. “I'm a little bit dumb.”
Scaramouche learns how to let go.

And that night, particularly, must have been a feast for their curious minds; for Wanderer, despite his name, was not one to wander aimlessly throughout the forest in the middle of the night. Even now, he had a destination, one that he dreaded deeply, aware that one of his deepest fears was out there, hiding amidst the vegetation, waiting to be confronted. He was aware that something was bound to change once he found it—perhaps he would meet his ending. Maybe he wanted that. At this point, he wasn’t too sure.
He did know, however, that if this fear of his demanded a claim on his life, then he would hand it over without hesitation. He’d expose his chest and bow his head to the ground, and bleed his sins out, one by one, until his victims got their retribution.

On the eighth day after his awakening, she visits him in person, finding him curled up on the divan like a pill bug. His hair spills over his face and shadows his eyes, but she can tell from the way his bare feet brace against the mattress beneath him that he’s awake. It makes the ball joints in his ankles, already visible through skin torn and pared down to the metaphorical bone, all the more prominent.
He doesn’t need to eat; Nahida brings him food anyway. He doesn’t move as she draws near, though she’s certain he hears her. In the dimness of the cell, the violet streaks in his hair seem almost to glow. Below them, the mitsudomoe symbol stamped into the back of his neck stands stark against his flesh—an indelible reminder of his artificiality.

With nowhere else to turn, Scaramouche seeks the help of Mondstadt's Chief Alchemist and hopes he can be cured of his ailment before Albedo discovers he's a Harbinger.
"It is a shame that Barbatos did not find you first," Albedo thought aloud and Scaramouche tensed all over, bristling at the perceived insult to his Archon. Before he could retort, however, Albedo continued, "You could have been under freedom instead of servitude."
And Scaramouche didn't know what to say to that.
