As they grow, Himiel trains in combat and music, honing her skills and forging a bond with Maedhros, who gradually softens his stern demeanour towards her.

    Her position wouldn’t have existed before the breaking of the Two Trees. She isn't old enough to remember it, born here in Beleriand, but she’d heard enough about it. Elves traditionally do not love lightly, only desiring their husband or wife, the partner of their soul, for as long as they and Arda remain.

    But neither do Elves traditionally kill their kin, or fight a desperate, unceasing war that nobody can imagine how to win. Nor should they sacrifice themselves in single combat with Morgoth, or become thralls to Angband, or…

    Here, it is different. There are enough broken people, husbands or wives dead, whole families dead, who haven’t had a place to leave their grief or a kind or intimate touch sometimes in centuries. She couldn’t do much, couldn’t fix the tragedies they were ensnared in, but she could give comfort, or pleasure, and when she could, in a world without much of either, she was proud to.

     

    Sex workers probably aren't very Tolkien, but neither are lots of things that the Elves did in Beleriand, so it got me thinking. What if?

    Himring is probably the coldest place that Maeglin has ever been.

    He tries to put away that thought, and not to shiver very visibly as he glances up through his lashes at Maedhros Fëanorion. Terrible and fell, his father had always said were the sons of Fëanor, and Maeglin can believe it. Of course, his mother’s stories had been different. But they had been few and far between.

    Above, Maedhros shifts forwards in his high seat with a slight rustling of heavy robes, and Maeglin trembles involuntarily. Out of the cold, he promises himself. Only the cold.

    “You wish to leave Gondolin,” rasps the lord of Himring, with no small amount of incredulity in his voice. “To come here?”

After further attacks and a desperate flight, they find temporary sanctuary with Círdan at the Havens of Sirion. Maeglin confesses the full extent of Morgoth's manipulation and his own guilt in Gondolin's fall to Círdan, who offers understanding.
