Summary
Arthur caught his sorcerer’s eye again. “If Emrys did have a simple, human identity, you wouldn’t have any suspicion who it could be, at all?”
“I wouldn't, I’m afraid.” Merlin shrugged one shoulder, seeming somewhat defeated. “I’ll look into it.”
Once, years ago, Arthur had been sure he could tell when Merlin was lying through his teeth. How frustrating it was to know that couldn’t be further from the truth.Or: In a fixed-it post-canon, word begins to get out about the godlike sorcerer Emrys who will aid the Once and Future King to unite all of Albion. This, of course, results in all the leaders of Albion beginning their attempts to win the elusive Emrys’ favor, in order to be chosen as his prophesied King.
Even as his Court Sorcerer, Merlin lives to antagonize Arthur and decides to inform the world -as Emrys- that he has already chosen his King, in a... less-than-conventional way. -

Merlin slumped into the room and fell onto the bench of the table across from Gaius, laying his head dramatically on a book of something or other Arthur didn’t bother to look too closely at.
“Cursed.” Gaius echoed, unimpressed.
“Cursed.” Merlin sighed back, like some kind of weepy maiden.
“He can’t lie,” Arthur supplied, walking further into the room and standing behind Merlin, pushing his head off the book roughly. Merlin squawked and glared at him before shaking his head and turning back to Gaius.

But they had been together for years now and Merlin knew him better than anyone.
He thought he knew Merlin just as well.
The thought that there was something Merlin was keeping from him, something he felt ashamed of enough to gag himself - it was awful.
He thought he could read him better than that. He always had in the past. Sometimes Merlin would fall into dark moods for no discernible reason and Arthur would prod him out of them with some effort. Because he could do that at least, could say ridiculous, pompous things until Merlin’s outrage outweighed his melancholy. But he had never really learned how to console someone, not properly. Not like Merlin or Morgana or Gwen. He couldn’t do anything to truly make anyone feel better except to distract them.
Maybe that was why Merlin didn’t want to tell him.
Maybe he knew Arthur was inept, knew he would only make things worse. Maybe he didn’t trust Arthur like Arthur trusted him.
The ride back to Camelot was silent and terrible and full of heavy things unsaid.

He is the king, but he's also just a man. And Merlin looks very pretty trying to pretend he isn't about to come.

Summary
Arthur gave Merlin his cloak thinking only of the warmth it would offer in a snowstorm. He never thought his manservant may be mistaken for him and snatched by bandits. Nor did he expect his dashing rescue of Merlin to turn his world so utterly on his head.
Because the bandits hadn't kidnapped a prince. They'd snatched a sorcerer, and now captivity is the least of anyone's problems.

Gaius dropped a half-finished potion, turned several fascinating shades of red and pink before moving on to near-purple, and yelled at Merlin for being irreparably foolish for quite a long while before Merlin was able to get a word in edgewise and was allowed to tell him anything more about the afternoon.
