Merlin's position as Arthur's manservant has become more widely known...it was only a matter of time until this became a problem.
Merlin swallows, hands curling into fists. The chains wrapped around his wrists squeeze as his muscles flex. Fresh blood leaks where the metal loops dig into his skin, running down his arms where they’re hung over his head. He shifts, trying to alleviate the pressure, but his toes just manage to scuff the ground.

Merlin didn't mean to become the Spymaster of Camelot, honest.
It just kinda…happened.
It's not Merlin's fault that when the Purge happened, the previous Spymaster was a known (but not very powerful) sorcerer, and was also young enough to have not yet taken on and trained a successor. In all the chaos, Uther had had to be much less discerning about choosing the man's replacement, and his focus was, and continues to be, locating ‘evil sorcerers’ rather than literally anything else.
In the end, Merlin was the perfect storm of charisma, power, knowledge, connections, and skill.

Gwaine pouted with resentment. "Oh, sorry. I should have known that you preferred Lancelot over me."
"I don't! I like you both equally!"
Gwaine turned away from him, crossing his arms.
Merlin shared an exasperated look with Gwen. "Look," Merlin said. "We didn't actually mean to set anything on fire. So you really can't base your statement over that."
Gwaine turned back to him with glee. "So does that mean you still haven't intentionally set anything else on fire after we burned that old lord's whole underwear drawer two weeks ago?"
"I suppose so."
Gwaine snapped his fingers. "That's it. We're going to set something on fire."

As per propriety and courtesy, the king of Camelot was required to hold a feast and provide accommodation for them. The feast started off smoothly, the royals of Camelot getting along quite well with the royals from Harden.
But a single question changed everything. Including the destiny and future of Arthur and Merlin.

SNEAK PEAK: In the heat of the realization, Merlin stood up, abandoning the waterskin and his cane, momentarily forgetting that he needed it, adrenaline clouding his judgment. He stumbled a few steps as he yelled out, "ARTHUR!"
Before he had a chance to say or do anything else, he found himself flying through the air toward a nearby tree. He felt his head connect with one of the roots that was sticking out of the ground. The warlock quickly ignored the pain and turned around. Before he could even think of a spell to cast, Morgana's magic was choking him.
Morgana glared at the meddling fool. He wasn't going to stop her this time. This time she would come out on top. Nothing and no one was going to get in her way.
In the haze of his pain and inability to breathe, he tried to move the invisible hand that was choking him. After several more seconds, he lost consciousness. The last thing he heard was Arthur calling his name.
