Izzy was already waking up because of a horrible dream (drowning – it’s always drowning). He wakes most nights, but on those other nights, he’s got an arm wrapped ‘round his middle or a stray leg curling around his own to keep him close. Even with the new, bigger bed Ed and Stede commissioned at port recently, they still sleep stacked on top of each other like one of Roach’s layer cakes.
But tonight…tonight Izzy woke on the edge of the mattress with his hands extended out, grasping for Ed and Stede. They were tangled in each other, both fast asleep, and Izzy had only barely made his escape to the bathroom before the dry-heaving and crying started.
