    Summary

It is Yuletide in Rohan, and Amrothos gives Éomer a gift. Lothíriel is appalled, but Éomer thinks on things he never considered before.

    PREVIEW:
Éomer had known both Lothíriel and Amrothos for a year, and he was fast learning the Gondorian art of understatement. […]

This new understanding served him well as he unwrapped his Yuletide gift, a surprise from Amrothos. Both Amrothos and Lothíriel looked on, and as the item came into view, Lothíriel raised her brows exactly half a finger’s breadth.

This meant, “no, no, you didn’t. Surely you didn’t.”

Amrothos’ lips turned up at the sides, a miniscule amount.

This meant, “oh, yes, yes, I did. Surely I did.”

    Summary

Princess Lothíriel is everything Éowyn is not: petite, refined, possessing an easy grace. But then Éowyn learns something shocking about her.

    PREVIEW:
Éowyn had never felt at home as either sex. No matter how much she trained in arms, she was never one of the men. She was not even a man when she was Dernhelm, for everyone knew her secret, though they pretended they did not. And when she was a woman, she never felt like she was enough. It was remarked that she was beautiful, but her hands were ungentle. She was tall and queenly but cold, and she was well-spoken but lacked the zest that made people listen.

When she met Faramir, he loved her in spite of the buts, and she forgot them for a while. But then a guest came to Ithilien: Lothíriel, Faramir’s cousin from Dol Amroth, and she opened up old wounds without even knowing.

    LOTR Week Day 1: Beginnings

En route to a ball, Amrothos insists that Lothíriel be nice to the King of Rohan, who is rough around the edges and frankly frightens her. She grudgingly agrees, but a pair of mischievous sisters, a vivifying dance, and the balmy air in a colonnade of fruit trees have other designs.

    PREVIEW:
    The King bowed deeply.

“Princess. My ladies.” His eyes settled on Lothíriel like a hunting hawk. Lothíriel felt goosebumps down her shoulders and her chest grew empty.

    “I—umm…”

There it was again. There was something about the King, who was handsome in a rough, round-faced and open-cheeked way, that made it near-impossible to speak or meet his eye. Even now, with his hair made flaxen by a bath and his fine clothing, she could not help but feel the way she did at five years old, when she had visited a menagerie and seen a lion. He was a great golden beast larger than a horse, and she stood at his cage as if at the edge of a precipice. She wanted to touch the golden paws and whiskers, and his deep rumble warned her what would happen if she did.

    Summary

Boromir returns to Minas Tirith after the battle of Pelennor, reuniting with his beloved. But she is a complicated woman, with grief and battles of her own.

    PREVIEW:
How well she had trained her heart not to flutter, whether in sentiment or in fear, it did not matter now.
“My lord—you—you?” Her breathing foundered. “How is it possible? By what fate?”
His lips curled and his voice was quiet, almost an intimate game.
“As you can see, it’s possible.”
“But they—they said you were dead.” She had no taste for games just then, and her words came harsher than intended. “You were seen—seen floating down the river…”
    “Who said that?”
    “I don’t know—people.”
His eyes flickered from her face to her neck, and he smiled in his way, pulling in his bottom lip and setting his teeth.
“Hm, others have told me of this strange fate,” he said. “But it seems no fire can spread faster than a rumor. Float I did, but not dead...”

Summary: Gimli takes what he likes, uncaring of who sees. A couple from across the pool cannot help but watch.

    PREVIEW:

“You like it?” Legolas cocked his head, angling his hips to look even finer in his triangle Speedo.

That pale green Speedo that showed way too much when it was wet.

“I like this,” Gimli said, putting aside the daiquiri.

    Summary

Boromir is wounded at Amon Hen, but his friends will not let him fall.

    PREVIEW:

    Boromir fell to his knees.

Somehow, with the hobbits there, it had felt like there was something left to fight for. That after what he had done to Frodo, he could atone for his sins. Now that was gone. His breath was shallow in his chest – it must have been that way all that time, but he never noticed. His limbs were heavier still – each like ten boulders, in need of strong horses to pull them. His vision rippled, its edges closing in. Everything was either very dark or very bright. He felt pain, but it was not part of him.

The bowman stood before him, a white, hungry smile on his grime-caked face. He raised his bow and pulled a final time.

    Summary

You wed the King of Rohan, a hero of the War of the Ring, and he adores you. But he is reluctant to speak of his feats of arms. You wonder if he is humble, or something more, until Edoras hosts a tournament.

    PREVIEW:
You asked him about his battlefield adventures, but he demurred, his granite-etched brow growing grim.
“You are such a precious companion,” he said, “and this night so full of life and hope. Why speak about such things?”
You glanced at your plate, the golden edge glinting in the firelight.
“I simply wish to know,” you said.
He gestured to a servant to bring more wine.
“Another day,” he said. “For my feats are storied. But at times, they are not the stories I wish to tell.”

    Summary

Lothíriel of Dol Amroth marries Éomer King of Rohan, but she despises her new home, with its unfamiliar landscape and customs. She seeks to escape the only way she knows how, but when her plans go awry, she finds redemption in a place she never expected.

    [Edits completed 8/2026.]

    PREVIEW:
The only pleasant thing she recalled was walking along the shore, her feet bare and her skirt hoisted up. Her chaperones followed far enough behind that if she looked up and listened to the sound of birds, she could pretend she was alone.

There were no beaches here, only endless grass, and woods from time to time. Lonely. Cold. Bleak, even in springtime. But in Dol Amroth, the sun was always high overhead, warm as a gentle pair of hands, and the sound of waves a rhythmic rustle against the shore. The sand was soft as down under her feet, and the water balmy as a lukewarm bath.

Sometimes, she was even allowed to swim, though the process of assembling guards and finding a secluded spot was an uncommon hassle.

She would not be going back there now. The bathtub was her only sea, the copper sides her only shores.

    Summary

The King of Rohan is young, but already a legend in the War of the Ring. But Lothír, the youngest Prince of Dol Amroth, is preoccupied with the King for other reasons. Why, for instance, does his strange, smooth chin seem incapable of growing a beard? And why do Lothír’s hands long to reach out and touch his round, moonlike face?

    PREVIEW:
“Yes, they call me the Knight of the Flowers,” he said, tightening his clasp still further.

The King grinned, and did the same.

“Yes,” Erchirion cut in. “When Lothír was expected, our parents so wanted a girl that they had thought of no masculine names. They even heard from a soothsayer that they would have their long-awaited daughter. So when he was born, they thought of nothing better than to make Lothíriel into Lothír. But it seems the name has been a blessing. From a young age he fought anyone who dared to call him Lothíriel, or Princess, and the only man who truly bested him is our beloved Elphir.”

    Summary

Summary: Éomer does not like heights, and Lothíriel tests his courage.

    PREVIEW:
[Éomer] glimpsed what lay below – people like ants, alleys like pieces of string, steeples like pikes ready to pierce him. His stomach twisted as he grasped the mossy stones. He tried to stagger back but his legs turned to jelly.

And then he heard Lothíriel laugh.

    Summary

Lothíriel comes to Rohan to wed Éomer King, but her body takes up arms against an unseen foe.

    PREVIEW :
[Lothíriel] buried herself under the covers after that, capitulating to Anoreth, who left to fetch a healer. She forbade anyone else from entering her room, and she lay in the darkness and stillness, thinking of how much she missed her big, sweet, rollicking Rohir, and yet how much she did not want to see him – not in such a state, and not under such disastrous, inauspicious circumstances.

At length, Anoreth and the healer returned, and Lothíriel, much as she would have liked to keep on hiding, was forced to take the blanket off her face.

    Summary

For the life of him, royal secretary Éothain cannot understand why people lose their minds in the presence of the two young princes. Then, he meets someone else who sees children in a unique light.

    PREVIEW:
With the arrival of the princes, who struck Éothain as no more different than two linen-wrapped eggs, the rest of the palace plunged into a predictable madness. Courtiers and commanders abandoned their dignities in a ritual of face-making and ululating praise. Ladies of every age discussed nothing else, and were full of observations plucked from the torpid summer air.

In no way could Éothain agree that Elfbrand had “eyes like luscious meadows,” and that Elfwine looked more like Lothíriel, when in fact both boys looked like hairless rabbits.

    Summary

Éomer returns from a sortie, and learns that a woman he cares for is in trouble.

    PREVIEW:
She was a sweet, amiable girl – though very frightened when she first came to Meduseld. He wanted the best for her from the moment he first saw her, but it was more natural now, without the fate of the realm coloring their every act.

    “Hafrith?”

    He stepped over the threshold.

Her only answer was a whimper.

    Summary

In Dol Amroth, food is an Event. A Ritual, even. One that Éomer struggles to get used to. But once he and Lothíriel taste a certain fruit of the sea, they cannot help but taste each other.

(FYI: the first chapter is the cute food story. The second chapter is the smut with plot).

    PREVIEW:

“Those seashells, though,” she whispered. “A hundred times I have eaten them. Conchs are not so rare here. But this time, they excited me. I had never thought of it before, but they resemble… something else. All pink and sinking, and holding themselves so open, as if asking for something. And their flesh has just the right give.”

Her smile was a sweet quarter-moon, and he tried very hard not to look at her rippling form underwater.

Sam is in love and hopes to forget, but Rosie will not let him. Frodo dons a disguise, and it becomes more than a mask.

    PREVIEW:
The night before they fled, she had spun around, bowing in her trousers, and exclaimed: “The wizard has given his orders! You shall call me… Mister Frodo!” […]

Now she lay on his lap and it was difficult to tell who she was – Mr. Frodo or Miss – and he doubted even she knew.

But perhaps he needed no answer. Her face lay untroubled, skin translucent, veins of blue running river-like underneath. New wrinkles had formed at the sides of her lips, but she looked neither young nor old, and like neither lad nor lass, but beautiful in a way that defied such divisions.

    Summary

Lothíriel has a miserable week at work, and comes home to find her parking spot stolen – yet again. She is determined to teach the thief a lesson, but he catches her in the act.

    PREVIEW:
Definitely the same car. Huge and hulking, “sleek and sporty” with the tricolored “M” and the wheels and hubcaps that faded, together with the body, into the darkness. The license plate was custom (of course!) and read FIREFT.

It looked like an enormous black roach – ugly, oversized – and she wanted to crush it.

Only that morning, she had hauled two chairs and a sheet out of her apartment, risking blisters in her new high-heeled booties. The snow was already falling, and the stairs were slick, and twice she nearly fell. But she planted the chairs in her spot, tied one end of the sheet to each one, and affixed a cardboard sign that read “Reserved!!!” to the middle of the sheet.

It was the last resort per the neighborhood code – after the notes, each progressively more terse than the last.

You did not move The Chairs.

Éomer and Amrothos reflect on life and death as they make ready for their ride to the Black Gate. Then, a Swan Knight arrives on a chestnut horse, frustrating Éomer’s solemnity.

Day 6 of Tolkien Women's Week: Reunite
[This version of Éomer and Lothíriel is a little different - ok, a lot different - from the one I usually write. I hope you like it!]

    PREVIEW:
“I – er – do the women of Gondor, er, bear arms as well?” [Éomer] asked. “In Rohan, we have shieldmaidens who protect the realm, but I have not heard of a similar practice in Gondor.”
    The Princess smiled.
“Oh, no, not many,” she said. “But they would never have heard the end of it, had they forbidden me from training with my brothers.” She winked at Amrothos.
    Amrothos smiled.
“Yes, you could not keep this one from a bow, or a sword, when she was young. And her fists are famous – always have been, ever since she could stand.”
“And you would know that, would you not?”

    Summary

Éowyn is in love with a coworker, but that is not her only secret. One Christmas, Elfhelm decides to matchmake his two employees, but the evening hardly goes as planned.

(This is a Love, Actually fixit, reimagined with the characters from LOTR. You don't really need to have seen Love, Actually to read it, though.)

    PREVIEW:
“Éowyn,” [Elfhelm] said, drumming his fingers on the desk, “how long have you been working here?”
    Éowyn calculated quickly.
“Hm. Two years, seven months, three days, and, I suppose, four hours?”
“I see,” Elfhelm said. “And how long have you been in love with Faramir Stuart, would you say?”
He said it so casually, as if commenting on the ebbs and flows of traffic.
The ground shifted under Éowyn’s feet, and it took years of practice in feeling less to keep from covering her face and collapsing where she stood.
“But – sir – with respect,” she said, as soon as she pinioned a rational thought, “that is my private life, and are not such things discouraged?”
    Elfhelm turned his eyes skyward.
    “Discouraged, hah!”

Each Yuletide, the inhabitants of Meduseld pick lots in a secret exchange of gifts. Lothíriel draws a name that challenges her.

    PREVIEW:
Often, the ritual brought together people who had little occasion to intersect. But in Lothíriel’s case, she knew her giftee very well, and it was as if the Valar had winked and nudged one another, conspiring to play a cruel joke.

    Summary

Hem is spending the Christmas holidays with Hadley and Bumby in Schruns, but he is troubled by a secret. He wakes one night to find a bizarre visitor in his room, who takes him on a journey he will not soon forget.

    PREVIEW:
At the table some paces away, there sat a man, heavy-set and grizzled. His bathrobe was an indeterminate color in the moonlight, and above his left brow, a smooth white scar rose like a hill.

“Who the hell are you? How did you get in?” Hem rose instinctively on the balls of his feet.

The man grinned like a Cheshire cat, his face coming fully into view. The right side seemed to be covered with dark lacquer.

“Well, fröhliche Weinachten to you too,” he said, raising a glass that came from Hem knew not where.

At the sound of his voice, Hem nearly toppled.
