The arm ring has spiritual meaning for the Vikings, but Ragnar had not gifted it with that intention. Ragnar has never pushed his deepest of beliefs onto Athelstan. He has only ever waited for Athelstan to reach his own decision. And what did Athelstan do with the symbol of that?
He threw it away.
Shame burns hot in him. Doubt takes root.
An AU where Athelstan explores a less finite choice with his religion, instead embracing both his God and those of the Vikings, and it changes just enough for him and Ragnar.
