(This is a story I was half-planning when watching the 2012 series, but was having issues getting around it with Splinter being the parent. Then I watched the space arc and knew exactly what I had to do. Suddenly it was perfect.
I go into depths of Donatello as a character and explore his amazing brain and personality, plus give him a bit of free therapy.)

A portal mishap results in the turtles and April being transported to a whole new world. One full of vikings and... dragons? Well, maybe mutants don't exist here, but a different type of reptile certainly does.
A normal morning flight ends with Astrid in the freezing ocean, and Stormfly in the hands of dragon hunters. Whilst on a mission to rescue the captured dragon, the riders stumble across another prisoner! One with a strange accent, strange clothing, and even stranger story. Maybe 'turtles' are just what her tribe calls dragons?
Now, to find the turtles, stop Dagur, save the imprisoned dragons, and get everyone back to their proper homes in as few pieces as possible.

“Heh.” He quirks a smile. “Kinda a coinkydink ‘cause-”
“Hamato Donatello.” Leo’s head shoots up and the turtle looks back. “My brothers are Leonardo, Raphael, and Michelangelo. They have nicknames too. Mikey, Raph…” He tilts his head, urging, “Leo.”
Leo stares, looking for any sign of deception. The turtle keeps talking, almost as if he’s trying to get the words out before his brain can catch up. “We’re a team. We fight crime and save people. I have a father. We call him Splinter. He’s a rat. Used to be a human. Adopted me and my brothers, taught us ninjitsu.”
Leo’s paralyzed. He waits for the snickers, or for the punchline.
The turtle does not shirk away, eyes bright with the maniac look that Donnie gets when he proves a theory correct and is dying for a single person to acknowledge that he’s the smartest being on planet earth.
“So. Leo.” It’s conversational, calm, eager. “What’s your family like?”

Gio had fallen into their lives at a point where the safety net had more holes than threads to hold. He was young, had the signs of a life hard won and fought through, but he tried. Absorbed absolutely anything his family would give him, even when it was nothing at all. Dark eyes, taking in any and all of the light he could just to find himself.
It was a tragedy in three parts just to watch him thrive off wavering candlelights and embers, wandering around the halls like a detective finding hints of some past crime.
Mikey squares himself. Finds that thread left in him that’s farther and farther away every day. Gio deserves the light, he can make some for him. He can.
Or: a series of standalone oneshots about Giorgio Hamato finding a home, getting adopted, and being loved back--not necessarily in that order. Set in both timelines.

“Standing at the entrance of Leo’s room, expecting to see something dangerous. Or perhaps a large mess, at the very least.
Instead, she spots the slider wrapped in his blanket so only his beak his poking out. Raph is knelt at the side of the bed, trying to coax him out.
“Come on, Leo! It’s not that bad, and it happens to us all the time!” The snapper huffs but doesn’t move to snatch the blanket.
It’s then that April notices the way that Raph’s shell is slightly discoloured and out of shape. Looking closer, the human realises that it, and his skin, seems like it is peeling away from his body.
Turning her attention to the mound of blankets beside him that should be Leo, she sees that a few thin chunks of what looks like her brother’s shell are scattered on the bed.
Suddenly, it clicks.
“Wait, you guys are shedding?” ”~
Turtles, like most reptiles, need to shed their skin. Though the process isn’t painful, it can be irritating for four mutated teenage turtles.
