Valinor was every bit as beautiful as the songs promised.
Its streets glittered with the dust of diamonds, gleaming under the radiant light of a sun that shone brighter, purer over the hallowed lands than it ever had over Middle-earth. The peaks of the Pelori, soaring and snowcapped, loomed pristine in the distance, mocking her with every glimpse. These were not mountains that had ever known the tread of an orc's foot, nor suffered spilt blood or harrowed screams. Even the sands of Eldamar were white and silken underfoot, nothing like the abrading grit of the beaches of Belfalas where her mother had once reigned.

Dead women made good martyrs, pretty saints. Disgraced ones did not. Hard to create a burial mound for a woman who did not want to go in the earth. No Haudh-in-Elleth for Celebrían, oh no. No songs or great tales, no posthumous pardon. Just flinching, sidelong looks and condemnatory whispers and the terrible, terrible burden of life ill-deserved.

Summary
The West was defeated at the Battle of Pelennor Fields and the war swept over Southern Gondor. To the dismay of all the Free People of Middle-earth, the Dark Lord Sauron regained the One Ring, His rising power threatening to plunge the world into a Second Darkness.
In the midst of this, two young maidens, twins Elfhild and Elffled, are captured by orcs in a preliminary raid against Rohan. Their world destroyed, their fate uncertain, they face the bleak prospects of slavery in the lands of their enemies.
The Witch-king of Angmar and his fellows struggle and suffer to serve a mad God who both loves them and seeks to destroy them. In truth, they are no more fortunate than Elfhild and Elffled, for they, too, are in bondage, locked in a silent war for freedom.
The Dark Lord Sauron, a victim of His own lusts, wishes to possess Arda and encompass it in His twisted love. He craves the worship and adoration of all mankind, but His thirst for total dominion of mind and soul twists and perverts all His designs.

Elros was hiding under the bed when the nightmares came for his mother.

He remembered playing with the jewels inside as a child. He hadn’t realized then how paltry they were for a princess of the elves; how even the jewels worn to war by a host of Aman would outweigh them.
But he knew the story behind each piece, and they had been given with love, nonetheless.
There were rocks in there too, and those he did not remember; he looked up at Elros questioningly.
They were interesting rocks; some brightly colored, some strangely shaped, some gleaming with hints of quartz or crystal. Elros seemed faintly embarrassed by them.
“I used to give them to Maglor when I thought he was angry,” he admitted. “I knew they wanted the Silmaril most, but I suppose I hoped any rock might help. I realized eventually. I hadn’t thought he’d kept them, though. I never actually opened the box when he gave it back.”
Elrond remembered that habit of Elros’s now. He’d thought at the time it was to cheer Maglor up; Elros had kept his own rock collection in Sirion that he’d treasured, and Elrond had more than once presented a pretty one to cheer him out a sulk back then.
“I thought you should have them now,” Elros said. “Since you’ll see Emel again one day, and I won’t. You can give them back to her.”
There was something very strange in Elros’s voice as he said this. Elrond did not quite dare question it. He focused instead on quietly sorting out the rocks he remembered Elros giving Maglor from the ones he didn't; those memories he thought he could risk asking for, and he should, before - Before.
Elros shrugged. “Or you can see if Maglor will take them back if you can find him again. Your choice.”
Elrond looked at the tiny necklace his mother had worn as she ran out of Doriath. “That would be an interesting choice to explain to her someday.”
For a rare moment, Elros’s voice turned to steel. “That would be fair,” he said. “As she has a rather interesting choice to explain to you.”
