Summary
Ferelden survived the Blight after the Grey Wardens united the lands to face against the darkspawn and the Archdemon, but after six months, the darkspawn are stirring again, and in strange ways. The Grey Wardens of Ferelden are forced to abandon their reconstruction efforts and reunite again to stop this new threat, and work to properly rebuild their Order in Ferelden.
But not only do they have to deal with the darkspawn (even worse, talking darkspawn), they also have to deal with their own problems that have grown during and after the Blight.

Summary
Elspeth Cousland survived the horrors of her family's purge and the Blight with barely a shred of her sanity intact, and is working to put herself back together again. She's determined to be useful and not get shoved to the sidelines. But when her old friend Nathaniel Howe returns to Ferelden, he's less than thrilled by his family's fate, and their friendship shatters under the weight of such trauma.
But from the ashes of the old friendship, they slowly find they can forge something new, and make a better world in the process.
Slightly altered DA universe. Hero of Ferelden is Kallian Tabris, mistress to king Alistair, and good friend of Elspeth (origins for this found in prologue). First person for Elspeth section, third person for Nathaniel. This fic will intersect with many of the events of DAA, but will not strictly repeat them - minor consequence of there being a surviving, non-Warden Cousland has some major impacts on the world. It will go into extra-game territory and original plot, particularly in tying some DAA and DA2 threads together in a largely canon compliant way.

The fact that the darkspawn continue to swarm the land surrounding the Warden's new base means plenty of opportunity to make that a reality. While an old crush from the circle provides a powerful temptation, it's the broody archer who just might change give her a real reason to go on.
A note: After I was well into this fic it was brought to my attention that another fic already exists that is based on the exact same premise and sharing many of the same ideas. This was grim but very enthralling. The fenris/ lav romance was visceral and not perfect and full of miscommunications just like a realistic romance is. It was an interesting read and the plot was well laid out but the end (I only read up to 98, I couldn’t stomach the bad ending or reading where she ended up back with her abuser) left me wishing there had been a sense of sweetness to end things with. It felt bleak right up until the end
