Summary

Ron glances to his side, to where Lewis Nixon has paused next to him. He doesn't know much about Nixon, assigned as they are to two different companies and with Ron coming in a couple months after Nixon and his OCS class, but he's heard things.
"The dark haired one," Ron says, turning his gaze back to the men. "He reminds me of someone I met once."
Nixon laughs, says, "Must've left quite the impression for you to look as shocked as you did, but it's unlikely to have been him. That's Eugene, Eugene Roe. Cajun, speaks better French than he does English. If we drop into Europe, he'll be useful. He's -- he's quite the conundrum, our Eugene."

Eugene’s hands were cold when they wrapped across the back of his neck–pulling him down to kiss him gently–softly–so different from the quick, aggressive, standoffish kisses he got in the woods of Bastogne, like the sun and rest had softened the medic like taffy. “I love you–I love you so much my chest hurts, mon dieu.” Roe says it between soft kisses, his hips slowly grinding against Bull’s thigh–his voice scratchy and his accent thick like molasses in a way that made Bull’s gut feel warm and his teeth feel achy with the sweetness.

Summary
Slowly and with great care, Roe goes about the business of severing the thin ties that had begun to bind him to Heffron. Day by day he transfers a little more of his dependency on to Renee - and it’s easy this time, it hurts less than with Babe. Roe realises, with a spreading warmth of shock and relief, that the worst has already happened: Renee is dead. He will never answer the scream for a medic and find her there, bleeding, begging, crying for her mother. It is nothing like the armed grenade that was his tentative friendship with Babe.
He has already lost her, and now there is nothing left to be afraid of.

Renee stays with Roe after her death, and after the war, and every day he spends with her he becomes a little less alive.(Note: Although Babe is absent until the end, he is a fairly huge and important factor in the entire story.)
