Der Literatur-Nobelpreisträger Thomas Mann begann im Jahre 1913 die Arbeit an seinem monumentalen Roman "Der Zauberberg", sah sich jedoch gezwungen, von 1915 bis 1919 das Werk ruhen zu lassen, um es sodann wieder aufzunehmen und schließlich im Jahre 1924 zu seiner vollendeten Gestalt zu führen. Auch wir sehen uns genötigt, die Bearbeitung unseres hier vorliegenden Romans - einer frivolen Zauberberg-Parodie mit weitaus tieferliegender Ambition - aufgrund anderweitiger Projekte zu pausieren. Noch in früher Korrekturphase, ermangelt der Text des stilistischen Feinschliffs, manche Stellen werden gar noch neu zu positionieren oder gänzlich zu streichen sein. Doch obschon fern von endgültiger Gestalt, weist das Buch bereits jetzt einige weit fortgeschrittene Szenen von durchaus schwungvollem Unterhaltungswert auf, welche die geneigte Leserin eventuell goutieren möchte. Aus diesem Grunde haben wir uns entschlossen, hier einen bescheidenen Einblick in den aktuellen Stand unserer Bemühungen zu ermöglichen und bereits vorzeitig einige Passagen zugänglich zu machen - auch in der Hoffnung, dass die eine oder andere Leserin vielleicht Lust zu verspüren vermag, mit einigen Emendationen zur Reifung des Werkes beizutragen.

The sketch is precise, fluid: two figures, kneeling face to face. One places their hand on the other’s jaw, eyes closed. The creases at the corners of a smile. The slant of lashes. The outline of collarbones.
“It’s time we move,” Yuma says.
