Gimli, freshly-wakened, was lying with his head propped on one hand, his blanket at his waist. And he said, his voice morning-hoarse, "If my memory doesn't fail me, we'll be reaching the River Limlight soon. I'd dearly love a wash."
Legolas's heart seized and tightened. The Limlight was in the very north of the forest, and once across it, they would emerge from their easy wandering, cracking out of the chrysalis to the pain of the open air. No more Fangorn, no more careless peace, no more Gimli at dawn stretching his muscles limber and grumbling about the wear of a bootsole.
And all the future losses lined themselves up.

When the Ring of Sauron was placed before him from the hand of a Hobbit, ripe for the taking, he smote it with his axe then and there! If what we do is evil, it is not of his doing. If what we do is unnatural, then let me be swallowed by the sea as Númenor of old! If you must disown me in the name of your disgust and prejudice, Adar, then do so and I will bear it. But you may never call Gimli Elvellon, Lockbearer and my beloved, evil. I have faced the Balrog; I have seen madness in the face of a Maiar; I have passed under the black wings of the Nazgûl. Now I hear foul poison in the mouth of my father! I know evil when it nears me, Adar. Gimli has none of it."
Thranduil fell back in speechless horror. "My son-!"

"It was given to you by Mandos," said Celeborn, and it was so unusual to hear him speak unprompted that Legolas quieted and thought about it.
"He pronounced a doom on me!"
"Well - "
"Without telling me!"
There was a pause. Then Galadriel said, "Most people would be more concerned about the doom."

Gimli just gave him a look, one that said, 'I know you're just trying to get me to do this by challenging me, and it's not going to work, but I will do what you asked anyway because I love you.' "As long as you are prepared for my mistakes as well as my successes."

He saw his driver falling, blood bright on his white shirt, and then he saw Lestrade's distinctive form, and watched in horror as the front of the vehicle seemed to explode in a huge gout of flame, dust and smoke, parts of the car flying through the air. Lestrade was lost in the dust and debris, but Mycroft was sure he could see a body, slumped on the road.
