Dream had accepted his fate, knowing such a life was the best he would have being born as an omega. Then he met Robert Gadling, the knight assigned to protect him during their travels to the Burgess lands. Everything changed.

Summary
Hob owns a watch.
It’s a fairly forgettable watch.
He’s had it for longer than he can remember, longer than he’s known his Stranger even.
He’s never opened it.
Why would he? He doubts it would even work; he’s fallen off a cliff with it, drowned with it, nearly died in a house fire with it. It’s impressive it hasn’t been lost or stolen.
However, he only starts to really notice it after that fateful night in 1889.
In 1989, Hob opens it.

(i.e. Hob is a Time Lord. He still meets Dream, but his so-called deaths are actually him regenerating. Why wouldn’t his human-watch brain assume the supernatural creature he met was the one who made him functionally immortal?)
