As Sole laid on their cot in the meager clinic of Sunshine Tidings Co-Op, their breath coming in rough, ragged gasps, their wounds just having stopped bleeding, Preston would have his head in his hands. He’d be worried out of his mind for this person he cared so much for, and he would finally realize that he didn’t care about status, he didn’t care that others might see it as inappropriate or wrong, he didn’t care if people finally knew how he felt, even if Sole didn’t return his feelings. That wasn’t what mattered. They deserved to know the truth, they deserved to know that, if they died, he didn’t think he would be able to go on. That, if it weren’t for them, he might not even be here at all. That they meant not just something to Preston, they meant everything to him.

Just as they were about to stand back up, to further their search, the distinct lack of breathing sounds caused their head to snap back to Hancock. They brought their ear to his mouth, waiting to feel the puff of air that never came. Pressing at his chest, Sole positioned themself over his mouth and began trying to resuscitate him, tears threatening to spill over onto their cheeks in their utter desperation.
“Don’t go Hancock.” They said between breaths, “Not you too.”

“You’re not so bad yourself.” Sole whispered, drawing a hand upwards to caress his cheek, running their fingers soothingly along his jaw as their thumb stroked his cheekbone. His eyes seemed to close involuntarily at the contact, and he turned his head to kiss the palm of their hand with meager lips. Sole smiled, bringing their fingers down to run over the line of his mouth as he tried to capture each individual digit in a kiss before they could be drawn away.

He let out a shaky breath, still dazed from the heavy sleep that had claimed him. It had been years since he’d slept like that, the last time he recalled sleeping so peacefully was when he was stationed at the Citadel in the Capital Wasteland. Even more than that, he had barely slept at all since discovering his true identity. Danse shook his head, trying to clear it of its sleepy fog, he went to rub his eyes, and he felt his heartbeat increase tenfold as the memories of his night with you came flooding to the forefront of his mind. Even now he felt the heat of a blush rushing to his cheeks. He turned his head, expecting to see your peacefully sleeping form on the mattress beside him. When he didn’t, he wasn’t sure what to do. Immediately, a slew of emotions and thoughts ran through him, ranging from shame, to panic, to anger, and most of all, hurt.

Some of his vital functions appeared to have been terminated. That and other strange...anomalies had left X6-88 disoriented enough that he was being forced to build a new operating baseline. Somehow these changes had preserved his functionality despite sustaining what should have been a critical degree of damage.
Perhaps not a malfunction, then, but rather an upgrade--the better to serve their stated goal of achieving revenge against the Brotherhood of Steel. X6-88 thought he could work with that.
