Summary
Everyone has a history. Sometimes that history is deep and dark, buried by time and a person's decision to leave it behind. Sometimes it is recent, conjured with a few thoughts. Sometimes it is unreachable, everyone who was a part of it dead and forgotten. Sometimes running doesn't help, and it catches up when people are unwilling to forget.
Lancelot was taken from his path in history when he made the choice to sacrifice his life, but due to circumstances he doesn't understand he found himself walking a new one with new companions and a new name.
But neither path had reached its end yet, and the stories of a crossroad and the intersections of lives were far from completed.

The altar seemed to speak to Merlin - this was the right thing, it had to be. The Cailleach watched him with her sunken eyes in her pale gray face. Merlin focused on those eyes, as the woman - god - began to speak.
“Perhaps,” the Cailleach replied.

Merlin always thought that Kilgharrah had meant to be encouraging. He had held onto hope for Arthur's return long after his memory of the actual man faded away. If he had seen the dragon's words as the true threat they were—a prophecy foretelling the utter devastation of Albion and her people—Merlin would not have been so eager. He would have battled through all his endless days to make sure his King would never return.
But destiny never had been kind to Merlin.
