Summary
Wrong Turn 'verse grew out of my kinkmeme action/comedy/UST-fest fic, Wrong Turn. I wrote a post-manga sequel to it, No Small Injury. NSI was plotted out in 2009, around the release of Chapter 98 of the manga. Some aspects of its post-manga plot inevitably got jossed. After finishing NSI, I worked out exactly where my 'verse diverged from canon events, and hammered Wrong Turn 'verse into a logical canon divergence 'verse. Much can be summed up as: "What if Olivia Armstrong hadn't survived the Promised Day?" Some of the ending AU is explored in stories, particularly the chapterfics and Curtain Call.

When a bad storm strands Varka at Flins's lighthouse, the two play chess to pass the time. After beating Varka twice, Flins agrees to play with a blindfold, provided the loser owe the winner a boon.

Chess metaphor story that feels a little like dissociative 3rd person because we're stylistically being told what's going on rather than see it play out which is one of my favorite styles actually and the repetitive words with the guiltguiltguilt is really good because it feels like its spilling over. The difference in perspectives was really enjoyable, with them like having the love hate relationship and them both thinking of themselves as selfish but also being intentionally toxic its just so good I feel like I have to reread and actually analyze it from a scholarly perspective because its combining alot of my favorite sorta niche things. And I didnt even mention the words guiding us through it with the little summary and metaphor and how its not the word detached but I cant think of a better one rn, adding on to that kinda viewer feeling but in such a pleasant way. The open ending too with the 6 moves to mate but obviously race metaphor and just love. My all time fav f1 ship is brocedes and the reason I like them so much is their toxicity so to see the kinda mirror of that with that same divide between love and hate, ooo its just the good stuff!

Lando’s nice and kind, and he’s everything Oscar wants to but can never actually be. Lando talks him up in interviews and excuses and excuses him, great race from the both of us, Oscar’s driving was mega, and Oscar doesn’t actually deserve it. He can’t help the pulls in the corners of his mouth, and he doesn’t deserve it. (oh Oscar i understand you)“Please say something,”
“What do you want me to say?”
Oscar clenches his fist, dull and measured pain, a perfect picture of control that Lando could draw instead, realism if he likes that genre. Maybe he likes fantasy and their silhouettes dancing together, the black-and-white image of something perfect, but Oscar can’t help but think that if they turned on the lights, maybe they’d see all the mismatched colours. “Just— something.”
“I love you.” (theyre in love but hearing it being painful not satisfying like its supposed to be is just truely one of my fav things because like I just love when people flip things on their head)It reminds him of someone firstly, and then his team as second, and Oscar imagines for the pH to be sour, like the marrow in his bones and the spit on his tongue and the tears in his eyes.
He wonders if Lando sees him at all, or if he just stares right through him. Wonders if when Oscar blinks it’s just static, too.
