Jack’s brows furrowed and his head quirked to the side in the way it did when he was seeing deep into someone before he knelt down and pressed both hands to the sides of Castiel’s head to force them to meet eyes.
“Dad. Its me.”
Castiel went stock still in Jack’s hands, eyes growing wide as he registered the warmth of Jack’s palms and the intent look in his eyes. None of what he said was any different from what Castiel had heard from the empty millions of times before, but the fear and anxiety laced in his tone, paired with the slight downward curve of his lips was entirely new. The Empty always conjured up moments of pure joy, without doubt or worry unless it was on Castiel’s part, so it would be all the more satisfying when he ripped them away—but this? This was raw emotion he saw in Jack’s eyes and the trembling of his hands. This was real.

Dean’s sitting at the kitchen table with Sam when his phone rings. Jody’s name flashes across the screen and he considers not picking up, but Sam’s there, and he’d start asking questions if he left the call alone. It’s not like Dean doesn’t want to talk to Jody, it's just that he can’t bear talking to anyone these days.
“Hi, Jody,” Sam says.
“Howdy, boys.” She greets them and begins talking about a case she’s asking them to take over. Dean doubts they will, Sam hasn’t let him pick up a gun or knife in months, not since their last hunt.
Jody’s voice cuts through the phone. “Alright, if you boys don’t wanna take the case, I’ll see if Castiel will, but I think he’s helping Claire in Colorado–”
Dean doesn’t hear a damn thing after that, and by the looks of it, Sam doesn’t either. For the first time in days, Dean opens his mouth and speaks. “Cas is alive?”
Jody’s voice is quiet on the other end. “He didn’t tell you?”
Cas is alive, and Dean is figuring out what he should do about that when they learn Cas's accidental jailbreak broke The Empty, letting out most of its occupants. Now that every villain they have ever fought is back, Team Free Will 3.0 has their work cut out for them.

Copy of my review: This was *amazing*. And it tackles issues I don't often see raised in SPN fics, or at least not to this extent. As a queer brown disabled immigrant myself, it's always been frustrating just how white SPN is, as much as I love it. So I was thrilled to see Kaia, Max and Alicia taking a bigger role here; I don't think I've ever seen the Banes twins in more than passing mentions in Destiel fics before. I loved seeing them tackle these causes that are so near and dear to my own heart, and I think you did a really good job showing the horrific reality of these things, especially the fucking pig brutality. I was so tense during that. I've not been attacked at protests yet, thankfully, but it's an ever present fear, and I have friends who have been assaulted and attacked by those fuckers at protests and rallies. (The shit Aboriginal people go through over here is fucked. We had BLM protests that named both George Floyd and the many Aboriginal folks who've died in police custody.)
Also, wow, what a wonderful parallel to canon!Castiel questioning everything he knew and falling for the sake of Dean and humanity. Seeing Castiel question everything here and realise his own privilege and do the work thanks to Dean and Claire and Kaia and the rest was amazing. And I loved that he listened and let the people who are actually affected take the reins in effecting change, instead of being a benevolent white saviour. And the ending! I am so thrilled that they mated, but I'm also so gleeful for the havoc Dean is going to wreak, and rightfully so.
This was lovely. Thank you. It can't have been easy to write.
