It is Enid that spits out her drink at her mother's strange words.

Tonight was to be the first Friday Alastor had spent in the hotel since Charlie and Vaggie had discovered his unfortunate night-time extracurricular activities.
Prior to that untimely discovery of what he might argue was simply Radio Demon enrichment, he had spent his Fridays in the staff parlour, usually in the company of Angel Dust whilst they critiqued the dancers on Vox’s show. Though he had spoken to Angel more than a few times since everything had happened, he still wasn’t completely sure where he stood with the man.
At least nobody had insisted he apologise to Angel – because where would he even start? Should he be apologising for trying to kill his friend – or for not trying to kill him?

He kept his back straight, resisting the urge to adjust the straps over his chest, even though one of them felt like it was shifting over his bony ribs. They couldn’t afford to show the least bit of weakness – not now.

His poker face was stellar, so as long as he kept his mouth shut and didn't let thoughts of Vox make him say or do anything completely foolish, he might just clean up.
