    Jason made a curious noise, somewhere between a hum and a question, but Tim didn't react.

    "Why?"

    "Kids shouldn't be sold" Robins shouldn't be sold, but he wasn't about to air out that sentiment.

    "So you’re a crime-boss with a code?" Jason prodded. Tim snorted.

    "Something like that. Is there a point to this meeting or can I go?"

     

    "B told us—Who you are, I mean"

     

    "Of course he did. You probably got a kick out of listening to your failed predecessor, huh?"

    Jason shook his head.

    "I think you're still good. I just wanted to let you know that. You're Dick's hero, too"

     

    Tim hefted himself off the wall. "Well, I guess you know what they say; Never meet your heroes"

    What a strange talk.

    The aftermath of a failed kidnapping reveals issues Tim had taken with him to the grave. But his family is too stubborn to let certain things rest in peace (hah).

    Tim nods.

    "You are going to die in that suit and there is nothing I can do or say that will ever stop you—really stop you."

    Tim swallows, his tongue suddenly heavier than he ever thought was possible. He looked at his dad, really looked. The salt and pepper hair, the pale sallow color of his skin and the deliberate way in which he sat, as if he still wasn't used to being able to move again.

     

    Slowly, he reaches out and pulls his dad into a hug. Jack seems startled at first but reciprocates quickly. Tim sighs. It was true, only an idiot wouldn't be able to see the pattern. The lifestyle was addicting and he'd die before he ever thought about retiring.

    Tim sank down by the doors to the operating room. The EMTs in the ambulance hadn't given good odds, and from what he could hear through the doors, they hadn't been lying. Truly, it was a miracle Bernard had made it to the hospital. Tim knew that.

    Most people would have been dead on arrival with injuries like his. Bernard, though, was a fighter, and Tim was so incredibly thankful for that.

    Or

    Bernard gets shot, and the outcome is about as bad as it could be, and Tim, well, no one ever accused him of being able to process grief in a healthy way.
