Summary
Before the argument could reignite, the doors behind them suddenly swung open with a dramatic whoooosh. Particles exploded outward in a shower of Spoke’s signature rainbow headband colours, and all three of them jumped back, weapons halfway drawn.
Spoke stood in the doorway, backlit by the warm glow of light from inside. His grin was wide and genuine, and his eyes had that faint shimmer that happened when he was particularly excited. For a moment, his outline seemed to flicker, like he was barely maintaining his physical form.
"You came!" he exclaimed, throwing his arms wide. "I was starting to think you guys were gonna stand me up!"
The three visitors exchanged glances. Parrot's hand stayed on his sword hilt.
"Spoke," he said carefully, "why exactly did you invite us here?"
"For a sleepover!" Spoke's grin didn't falter. "Come on, don't just stand there! It's cold out and I made snacks!"
Spoke somehow managed to appear behind them, already herding them toward the door. "In, in, in! I spent all day setting this up!"
"That's what I'm worried about," Wemmbu muttered, but he allowed himself to be shepherded forward.

The room was a disaster. Not ransacked or destroyed, but wrong in a way that made Zam's instincts scream. Wemmbu's armor lay scattered across the floor in pieces, as if he'd torn it off in a hurry. The window shutters were closed tight despite the midday hour, leaving the room dim and stifling.
And there, curled up on the bed in a tangle of blankets, was Wemmbu.
"Oh, hell," Zam breathed.
Even from the doorway, he could see the fevered flush spreading across Wemmbu's paled purple skin, could hear the labored breathing that rattled in his chest. Wemmbu's usual meticulous appearance had completely deteriorated—his purple hair was plastered to his forehead with sweat, his shirt was twisted and halfway unbuttoned, and his horns, those distinctive horns that marked his inhuman heritage, seemed to droop slightly.
Zam had never seen Wemmbu's horns droop. He hadn't even known that was possible.

“Sit,” the dragon orders, and you comply. On your injured leg, you wouldn’t make it far even if you decided to run. “Eat.” He nods his head at a small pile of sunsettias.
You eye the pile nervously, not moving.
The dragon makes a low chuffing noise. “You are a vexing little thing indeed,” he says. “If I intended to kill you, what use would I have for fruit? Eat, before you worsen your fever.”
You take one of the sunset-colored fruits in hand. It’s warm and soft, as if freshly picked.
“Thank you,” you say quietly, and bite into the tender flesh. The juice dribbles down your hands and chin, but the fruit is sweeter than any you’ve had before, and you eat it ravenously. The dragon huffs a slight sigh, seeming satisfied.
When the last of the fruit falls off of the sticky pit, you look back up to find him still staring at you with mild interest. Under his gaze you feel smaller than an ant, and you wait for him to speak again.
“I wonder what you hoped to find here,” he muses aloud. “Even a rabbit chased by dogs wouldn’t run into fire. What is it that chases you, then, little rabbit?”

Your pink melusine assistant at your side writing notes. The best thing about you that made Freminet nearly faint, was a clockwork penguin at your side with pink accents. The same one that Freminet manufactured for a no name client in his free time. He had a chance. He had a chance to see you…you knew his name. You knew who he was. Freminet pushed back his feelings to talk to you, because he didn’t want to love someone who was so out of reach from him. Little did he know, you weren’t so out of reach after all.
