Despite all the students rushing past him into the school building, William stood still like a pebble in a stream, parting the trickle of students. Today was a normal day for all of them. Not for William— today was the morning of April 16th, the day that he was going to kill himself.

Summary
Nothing is the same after Overlord. It's unspoken. It's said in the tired, nervous glances at each other in the quiet days afterward. It's said in small smiles that try provide comfort they cannot muster because they are teenagers that...
They lost. It's not a hard truth to admit, no matter how bitter, because that is the crux of it. They defeated Overlord but they did not win, and the consequences are ones they have to live with. Ones that echo in the silence of Defenders Hall and bounce around empty walls into emptier rooms. Consequences that leave a note on a countertop and an olive branch ignored and broken.
William has been through a lot. Maybe not nearly as much as Vyncent - no, definitely not nearly as much. His life is laughably normal, both deaths and all, compared to dimension hopping by force. But through it all, regardless of how little he thinks of himself as a hero and how he doesn't quite believe in heroism, William never thought that being a hero in training would lead to this.

William wasn't really a touchy-feely person. He was cold and often clammy - his body reacted to the heat he surrounded himself with like he was still alive, but it refused to let him feel warm - and that put people off. As did the constant shivering.
He wasn't upset when people sat down two seats away from him, or grimaced when they shook his hand, or knocked him down in the halls because they hadn't noticed him.
Really, he wasn't. He'd learned. He was good. He stayed away from people, learned how to be unnoticed even in the most conspicuous circumstances, and he… Survived.
