Did he? Was she right? All his anger crumpled down into a fear that settled like sludge in his throat. He didn’t think he did that stuff but what if he had? What if his family really just didn’t want to tell him his flaws because he would blow up on them? He had always thought he was levelheaded and took criticism well, but look at him now, about to yell at one of his friends for giving him that same criticism. Maybe she was right, maybe Tommy was the bad guy.
Or, a friend from school tries to gaslight Tommy. Luckily, he's got enough brothers who will tell him just how amazing he is.

Tommy has this whole collecting siblings thing down to a science. He knows what to do and what to expect.
A friend does a nice thing for him or Tommy cheers them up, they get exceptionally close and talk more, then Tommy gives them a stuffed animal along with the sibling squad offer.
Same old routine. Wash, rinse and repeat.
Which is why he never saw the members of Lovejoy claiming him as a younger sibling coming.

Summary
Tommy feels anxious a lot, a lot more than normal. And he know that. But he doesn't want his family to know. Doesn't want them to worry. Even as he panics over the mundane things and with seemingly no reason. He needs to be who they expect him to be, loud, funny, brash bold.
He needs to be Tommy.
Even if Tommy is more of a caricature than the real him at this point.
So he lies, he pretends. He fakes smiles and pushes out peals of laughter he doesn't really feel. He ignored his trembling hands. He takes up as much space as he can even when all he wants to do is shrink into himself.
But lies can only go so far. His family find out, and rather than berating him and shouting at him like he expected, they hold him gently and wipe his tears.
Because through it all, Tommy forgot the most important thing.
That he is loved.
